Pat Quinn, formerly the boys' basketball coach at Saddleback High School, has been hired to be the girls' coach at Woodbridge, Warriors Athletic Director Dave Cowen announced Wednesday. Quinn guided Saddleback to the 1989 Division I-AA championship game, where it lost to Long Beach Millikan. Quinn replaces Eric Bangs, who led Woodbridge to a 33-1 record and the State Division II title last season.

Mark Messier, the former Edmonton Oiler center who led the New York Rangers to the NHL's best regular-season record, was named winner of the league's most-valuable-player award on Tuesday. It was the second time in three years that the Hart Trophy had gone to Messier, who won it in 1990 when he led Edmonton to the Stanley Cup title. The Rangers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the two-time NHL champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pat Quinn looked around for a coach who could right the Vancouver ship, then glanced in the mirror and reappointed himself. Quinn fired Rick Ley as coach on Thursday with six games left in the regular season and will return behind the bench tonight for a home game against the Chicago Blackhawks, taking time off from his general manager duties to lead Vancouver into the playoffs.

Pat Quinn remained hospitalized Wednesday with an irregular heartbeat as the Toronto Maple Leafs prepared to go at least one more game of the Eastern Conference finals without their coach behind the bench. "He's undergoing more tests and he will remain in the hospital until his heart is in regular rhythm for a long enough period of time that doctors believe it will remain in regular rhythm," Maple Leaf President Ken Dryden said Wednesday.
