The seven babies born to Patti and Sam Frustaci in 1985 took the couple on an odyssey from hope to heartbreak: Only three of the infants survived. The septuplets--four boys and three girls--were born by caesarean section 12 weeks premature in Orange County. One was stillborn. The other six ranged in weight from 1 pound, 1 ounce to 1 pound, 13 ounces. During the next 19 days, three of the infants died, all from hyaline membrane disease, a condition in which the lungs collapse after each breath.

Patti and Sam Frustaci, parents of the first septuplets born in the United States, Tuesday sued the West Los Angeles clinic and the doctor who treated the mother with fertility drugs. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses Dr. Jaroslav Marik and the Tyler Medical Clinic of medical malpractice and causing wrongful deaths through failure to properly care for Patti Frustaci while she was being treated with the fertility drug Pergonal in the fall of 1984.

The first birthday for three surviving septuplets born to Patti and Sam Frustaci was marked Wednesday by disclosures that the two boys have cerebral palsy and all three suffer from eye, hearing and breathing disorders. Janice Corsino, an attorney at the Los Angeles firm that represents the Riverside family, said the two boys have had hernia surgery and all the infants have been attached to monitors that sound a warning when breathing stops.

The first-born Frustaci septuplet will be released from Children's Hospital of Orange County on Wednesday but will leave her two brothers behind, hospital spokesman Laura Johnson said. Three-month-old Patricia Ann Frustaci, who weighs almost 5 pounds, will leave for the Riverside home of her parents, Patti and Samuel Frustaci. Her brothers, Richard Charles and Stephen Earl "are doing fine, but they haven't gained the weight to go home," Johnson said.

A smiling little girl, eyes twinkling behind Coke-bottle glasses, opens the door of her brand-new home in a tract alongside the orange groves on the outskirts of Riverside. Her brother, smaller, thinner, but with the same sunny countenance, chatters merrily by her side. From the look of it, the boy could be a year younger than his sister. In fact, the two were born but a moment apart, and they had company. Five more babies emerged from the same womb, all under 2 pounds. One was stillborn.
