A lawyer for Heidi Fleiss' father may be allowed to represent him at trial, even though the attorney may have to cross-examine his client's second daughter, whom he used to represent, a judge said Tuesday. But U.S. District Judge Consuelo Marshall said Philip Heller must first waive his client's right to appeal on the basis of "ineffective counsel," an issue Paul Fleiss otherwise conceivably could raise if convicted on tax evasion and money laundering charges.

You might wonder whether a doctor with a history that includes a felony conviction in 1995, a public reprimand and a one-year term of probation from the Medical Board of California in 1996 has trouble keeping patients and attracting new ones. But Dr. Paul Fleiss, a 74-year-old Los Feliz pediatrician and father of the infamous Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, is not a typical doctor.

As hundreds of supporters, some with nursing babies in their arms, packed a federal courtroom Monday to show their support, Los Feliz pediatrician Dr. Paul Fleiss was sentenced to three years probation for conspiring to hide the profits from his daughter Heidi's call girl ring. The thin, gray-haired doctor, who has practiced medicine in Los Feliz for 30 years, smiled in relief as U.S. District Judge Consuelo B. Marshall pronounced the sentence.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office said Friday that it would not file criminal neglect charges against prominent HIV skeptic Christine Maggiore, whose daughter died last year of what the county coroner ruled was AIDS-related pneumonia. But in a separate development, the Medical Board of California filed an accusation this week against one of the 3-year-old girl's doctors, citing gross negligence in his treatment of her.

He is probably the last man anyone would picture as the Hollywood Madam's dad. Pediatrician, scholar and lecturer, Paul Fleiss told other people how to raise their kids. Even now, in homes across Los Angeles, mothers quote his signature advice: "Just love 'em," the doctor would say with a smile. "You can't love your kids too much." It's an adage that carries a bittersweet irony.

Dr. Paul Fleiss, a prominent pediatrician and the father of Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, is expected to plead guilty in federal court this morning to charges of conspiracy to conceal his daughter's illegal income from the Internal Revenue Service, his attorney said Wednesday. The elder Fleiss, who has practiced medicine in Los Angeles for 30 years, will plead guilty to lesser charges in an effort to reduce his potential sentence, attorney Christopher Caldwell said.

Long before his daughter was arrested on pandering charges, Dr. Paul Fleiss was told that she was running a prostitution ring, according to a plea-bargain agreement signed by the prominent pediatrician. Fleiss' acknowledgments in the plea bargain--approved by a federal court judge Thursday--are sharply at odds with his previous contention that he had no idea of Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss' illegal activities.

Heidi Fleiss, the accused Hollywood madam, and her father, a 60-year-old Los Feliz pediatrician, pleaded not guilty Monday to federal charges of tax evasion and money laundering. Their U.S. District Court arraignment came just weeks before Fleiss, 28, is scheduled to go on trial in state court on charges that she operated one of the West Coast's most exclusive call-girl rings. Authorities allege that Dr.

Re "Heidi Fleiss, Father Indicted on Tax Charges," July 29: I have known Dr. Paul Fleiss for 19 years. He has been our children's physician since our oldest daughter was a baby. In every news account, he is referred to not only as Heidi Fleiss' father but also as a "prominent and wealthy pediatrician." Now, he is also accused of being Heidi's crime partner. It is an ironic twist--the "sins of the children will be visited on the parents." How tragic that a human being can lead a life of service and dedication only to have his moral character and reputation soiled by innuendoes and sensationalism.
