The Coast Christmas Tournament final was too slow for Edison High School and ended too quickly for Corona del Mar. Edison won the tournament Wednesday, defeating Corona del Mar, 50-49, in the Estancia gym. The Chargers (10-4) outscored Corona del Mar, 18-17, in the fourth quarter by getting some semblance of its running game going. Edison's last four field goals were made via the running game.

Team cap-tain (teem kapten) n . The designated leader of a sports team, responsible for maintaining team morale, motivation and unity. See also Darren Morris of Corona del Mar High School. Morris is the quintessential team captain. Between phrases such as "We take one game at a time," and "Let's work as hard as we can," Morris surpasses the typical team captain. In a position often equated with team social director or doughnut supplier, Morris, a senior guard, takes his job seriously.

Paul Orris has resigned as boys' basketball coach at Corona del Mar after 15 seasons. Orris, 53, said he would take at least one season off from coaching basketball, remaining as a math teacher at the school. Orris led his varsity teams to a 229-199 record, including Southern Section Division IV-AA championships in 1993 and '95. His Sea King teams won three league titles and made 12 trips to the postseason, where they were 29-10.

Corona del Mar 39, South Pasadena 36--Senior forward Jon Upham led all scorers with 16 points for the Sea Kings (13-12) in a defensive battle. "Our record is deceiving," Corona del Mar Coach Paul Orris said. "Almost every (nonleague) team we played this season finished first in their league. Playing that kind of schedule helps us when it's tournament time." The Sea Kings and the Tigers were tied, 29-29, going into the fourth quarter.

Where--Arrowhead Pond, 9 a.m. today. Corona del Mar (18-10)--Coach Paul Orris said he took some heat from his friends for having to win only two games to reach the finals of this eight-team division, but he added, "You still have to work as hard to get to the final. . . . Lots of teams would like to be where we are." Corona del Mar, which finished fourth in the Sea View League, had won a total of only 10 games in the two seasons before this, so reaching a title game, any title game, is sweet.
