The body of a 39-year-old woman was found Saturday by firefighters responding to reports of a blaze in her Van Nuys apartment. The shooting victim, Carol Ann Hix, was found shortly after 3 p.m. in a complex in the 15800 block of Vanowen Street, Los Angeles Police Detective Paul Stewart said. Police are seeking Nancy Crue, 42, of Van Nuys, in connection with the slaying, Stewart said. The cause of death appeared to be a gunshot wound from a small caliber weapon.

Adeaf Long Beach man was shot in a Van Nuys apartment while his friend, also deaf, slept through the shooting in an adjacent bedroom, authorities said. James E. Powell Jr., 27, was killed while visiting a friend, Yvonne Burnita, in the 15300 block of Vanowen Street on Friday night, police said. Burnita took a nap, and when she awoke an hour later she found Powell dead in her living room, said homicide Detective Paul Stewart.

Aman found dead in the back of his pickup truck in the parking lot of a Northridge medical building was identified Wednesday as Charles Suppa, 28, of Canoga Park, police officials said. The body was found wrapped in a blanket about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the medical building in the 18000 block of Roscoe Boulevard, Detective Paul Stewart said. A motorist who had pulled beside the truck to park discovered the body, he said.

A Van Nuys woman being raped in her apartment by an intruder who held a knife to her throat stabbed the man to death Tuesday after he put the weapon down, Los Angeles police said. The 25-year-old victim awoke about 3:30 a.m. in her darkened apartment to find the man holding a steak knife to her throat, Detective Paul Stewart said. But "at one point during the sexual assault, he put the knife down and she saw an opportunity to escape," Stewart said.

A 28-year-old Canoga Park woman was shot in the head Saturday and her male roommate was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. Karen Roney was in critical condition Saturday night at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where she was taken by paramedics responding to the 8 a.m. shooting at a home in the 20500 block of Archwood Street, said West Valley Division Detective Paul Stewart.

Peg LaCentra, 86, an actress and big band vocalist known for dubbing the singing voices of actresses Ida Lupino and Susan Hayward. Born Margherita Maria Francesca LaCentra in Boston, she began her career as a radio actress in the 1930s. She joined orchestra leader Artie Shaw after he met her on "The Mell-O-Roll Ice Cream Show," and recorded with him and with Jerry Sears. She also sang with Benny Goodman's band. In 1939, she starred in "The Peg LaCentra Show" for NBC radio.

An aspiring actress from England, apparently despondent over the suicide of her jilted lover, may have shot her husband to death before killing herself, police said. The body of Victoria Howden, a 26-year-old aspiring actress and model, was found in a Sherman Oaks apartment Monday after a friend told police that the woman had threatened to kill herself, said Police Lt. Richard Blankenship. Her fatally wounded husband, Charles House, 40, was dead on arrival at UCLA Medical Center.
