Miguel Tejada became the first high-profile player convicted of a crime stemming from baseball's steroids era, pleading guilty Wednesday in federal court in Washington to misleading Congress about the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Under a plea agreement with the same prosecutors pursuing a perjury indictment against Roger Clemens, Tejada admitted he withheld information about an ex-teammate's use of steroids and human growth hormone when questioned by a House committee's investigators in August 2005.

The NCAA released its latest Graduation Success Rates on Tuesday, with the football teams of the Pacific 10 Conference earning mixed grades. No surprise to see Stanford ranked at the top of the class. While the Cardinal has struggled through six consecutive losing seasons on the field, 93% of its players have earned degrees. Washington State is second among Pac-10 teams at 68%. The Los Angeles schools, UCLA and USC, registered at 62% and 54%, respectively.

Oregon is without its starting quarterback and tailback — and it doesn't seem to matter much. Against Colorado, freshman quarterback Bryan Bennett threw for a pair of touchdowns while stepping in for Darron Thomas , who sat out because of an injured knee. Junior Kenjon Barner rushed for a pair of touchdowns in place of LaMichael James , who missed his second game because of an elbow injury. That left Colorado Coach Jon Embree with his mouth agape following his team's 45-2 loss to the Ducks.

About the only thing left for Cal State Northridge to play for this season is self-respect. And a little excitement. The Matadors might get a little of both today with a Big Sky Conference game against Eastern Washington at North Campus Stadium. Although Northridge (2-5, 1-4 in conference play) is out of the Big Sky race, the Matadors, coming off a 24-12 victory at Montana State, have rallied in recent weeks.

The Pacific 10 Conference awoke to a glorious new sensation this week, heavily favored USC having suffered an upset loss, the race for the Rose Bowl thrown wide open. The king is dead . . . Or maybe not. At least one Pac-10 coach attributed the Trojans' defeat to nothing more than an off day. Certainly no one was ready to dismiss a program that has won six straight conference titles.

Anyone looking to explain this troublesome September in the Pacific 10 Conference might begin by searching the skies. Keep a watch for footballs wobbling through the air like wounded ducks. In a conference that lives and dies by the pass, too many young quarterbacks have been forced into action too early, which might account for the upset losses and the fact that, for the first time since 2000, only one Pac-10 team ranks among the Associated Press top 25. "No question about it," Oregon State Coach Mike Riley said.

USC knew what it was facing, however unorthodox, before the Trojans played top-ranked Oregon. Arizona State might be more mainstream, but also perhaps more unpredictable. As in: Which Sun Devils team will show up Saturday night at the Coliseum? Arizona State is 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference. The Sun Devils defeated Washington and Washington State, and lost to Oregon, Oregon State and California in conference play. Still, Arizona State, under fourth-year Coach Dennis Erickson , seems better than its record indicates.

Always be wary of Cougars. That seems to be UCLA's approach for its game today against Washington State. The Cougars are 1-8 overall, 0-6 in Pacific 10 Conference play, and have become such doormats that "welcome" could be stenciled on the jerseys. Washington State graduate Keith Jackson would certainly use a hearty "Whoa, Nellie!" talking about his alma mater's football team -- and not in a good way. Consider: These Cougars rank near the bottom among the nation's 120 major-college teams in nearly every offensive and defensive category.

As the new guy at Washington State, Coach Paul Wulff sounds a bit overwhelmed, as if he needs a few more weeks to get his team ready. "It's a little surreal," Wulff said. "Still feels like things aren't completely settled." But football waits for no man. Not when the schedule lists a full slate of games from Thursday night through Monday, the start of the Pacific 10 Conference's 93rd season. Complete story, D8. On your marks No time for easing into shape, no chance to scout the competition -- the race for the Rose Bowl gets off to a Le Mans start for four teams scrambling directly into conference play.

Utah and Colorado officially joined the Pacific 12 Conference in July, but Kyle Whittingham , Utah's football coach, predicts more schools will soon follow. "It's inevitable that there are going to be four super-conferences in Division I football with 16, maybe even 18 teams in each conference," he said Tuesday during the weekly Pac-12 football coaches' conference call. "I'm not saying I'm in favor or against. I just think that's where it's headed, and I don't see any way around that.
