The Ducks tried to sell themselves on the idea. "Goalies are goalies," Ryan Getzlaf said. "The best thing we can do is throw rubber at him. " Their coach all but aided and abetted in those thoughts. "It's a four-by-six net you have to cover," Randy Carlyle said. "You're not going to do that entirely unless you're a sumo wrestler dressed in hockey gear. " Well, goalies aren't just goalies and, when the rubber hit the Stanley Cup playoff road, the Nashville Predators did seem to have a sumo wrestler in net. Photos: Game 1 ?

Times columnist Helene Elliott rates the pluses and minuses in the NHL from the previous week: PLUSES + Kudos to Vancouver Canucks goaltenders Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider for appearing in a four-minute video that spoofed their much-hyped rivalry for the No. 1 job. Produced by Canada's TSN, the skit is funny and clever as it portrays the two trying to top each other while pretending to be friends. They turned a controversy into a comedy and did it well. + The Pittsburgh Penguins extended their winning streak to nine Sunday with a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins, vaulting past Montreal for the East lead, though the Canadiens have two games in hand.

The nameplate above Viktor Fasth's locker is misspelled, but the Ducks' new backup goaltender established his identity to everyone else Saturday. Fasth stopped all three shootout attempts by the Nashville Predators in his NHL debut, definitively stopping and gloving with his right hand a final effort by David Legwand to clinch the triumph. "I feel great," Fasth said on the ice afterward. "That's why you want to be a goalie. " Corey Perry rifled the game-winner in the shootout, wristing a shot to the left of Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne.

Loui Eriksson scored a go-ahead, power-play goal with 3:42 left to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory Saturday and send the Nashville Predators to their fourth loss in a row. While Shea Weber served a boarding penalty, Eriksson set up in front of the net and redirected newly acquired defenseman Alex Goligoski's shot past Pekka Rinne for his 21st goal. Earlier in the third period, Goligoski scored his first goal since he was acquired by the Stars from Pittsburgh on Monday. Tom Wandell added a goal, and Kari Lehtonen made 25 saves for the Stars, who snapped their season-worst five-game losing streak Thursday at Detroit.

Either way, the Ducks go home after playing the Nashville Predators on Sunday night. They could be returning to Anaheim to get ready for Game 7, with chance to advance in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Or they could be headed back to tie up loose ends and for chitchat about tee times and family vacations. "If you don't recognize the situation going into this game, then there is something wrong with you," forward Bobby Ryan said. The Ducks were 36 seconds from taking a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven first-round series Friday when Nashville's Shea Weber scored, sending the game into forcing overtime.

+ Goaltender Pekka Rinne will buy dinner for his Nashville teammates for a while after signing a seven-year, $49-million contract extension. That's pricey but a great investment if it convinces free-agents-in-waiting Shea Weber and Ryan Suter that the Predators mean business and they should stay in Music City. + Winger Eric Nystrom has scored three goals in eight games since Dallas, which needed to reach the salary floor, paid full price to acquire him from Minnesota instead of claiming him for half price on waivers.

Jonathan Quick 's stoic manner undoubtedly kept him sane while the Kings gave him precious little scoring support. But surely he let loose and celebrated Wednesday after learning he's a finalist for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender? "Yeah," Kings teammate Jarret Stoll said. "The opposite of what you just said. " Quick reacted calmly to news that he's vying for the Vezina with Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers and Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators.

The Kings had never done a 10-year deal. Not with defenseman Drew Doughty, not with center Anze Kopitar and not even going back to the days of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. That barrier was broken Thursday with the team's 10-year contract extension with Conn Smythe-winning goalie Jonathan Quick. Those familiar with the deal but not authorized to comment on the details said it was worth $58 million, noting it tapered off in the final three years, making it salary-cap friendly. The extension kicks in after next season when Quick is to make $1.7 million, a bargain for a playoff most valuable player.
