In director Ridley Scott's colorful crime thriller “The Counselor,” which reaches theaters Friday, Javier Bardem is back doing what he does best. That is, stealing nearly every scene he's in with an outré hairdo. Sure, “The Counselor” arrives stacked with an all-star cast of Hollywood's handsome and gorgeous: Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz. But the Oscar-winning Spanish heartthrob concocts his character through coiffure, defining the dramatis personae of his shady nightclub impresario part with a daring 'do that's all spiked-up hair and silken menace.

Movie star Penelope Cruz is enjoying a sort of jetlag in her celebrity, having recently moved to Hollywood from her native Madrid: "Here I'm going out every night because nobody recognizes me." Yet, that is. Those unfettered Melrose shopping sprees will soon be over. This season Cruz stars opposite Matt Damon in Billy Bob Thornton's adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "All the Pretty Horses." After an early screening of the film, she is full of unqualified enthusiasm.

IT'S the middle of a sun-blasted September afternoon, and Penelope Cruz is sitting in an empty hotel banquet room, Chanel bag by her side. She is trying to talk about acting, but she keeps coming back to legendary Spanish flamenco singer Camaron de la Isla. Camaron devotees don't usually carry Chanel bags. He was raw, brash and dead at 41, and his singing was the sound of hurt, his cigarette-stained voice a cracking tumult of anguish that sliced through any adornment that tried to dress it up.

"Woman on Top" is tedious as only a film with a truly beautiful star can be. If Penelope Cruz were any less attractive, maybe someone would have noticed how dull this mild, would-be romantic fairy tale has turned out. Then again, without someone like Cruz, this lightweight production would never have been made.

For French actress Marion Cotillard, it's not the directors, the scene, or even the casting grind that can make Hollywood exhausting. It's the accents. The "Inception" star is the rare performer with a flourishing career in both the United States and continental Europe. But even after nearly a dozen English-speaking roles, getting her mouth around the words is still tricky. "I tried to do it for a little while without a dialect coach," she said by phone from Paris, in nearly flawless (but accented)

On a recent rainy day in Manhattan, Pedro Almodóvar's tousled gray hair, generally studiously gravity-defying, looks less a result of styling than the repetitive raking of his hands. The 60-year-old Spanish writer-director, jet-lagged from his flight from Madrid, has been on a jag -- consulting on a Broadway-bound musical adaptation of his 1988 dramedy "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," as well as talking about his new film, "Broken Embraces," arguably his most personal and personally exposing work.
