at Pepperdine 72, Cal State San Bernardino 70: Keion Bell scored his team's final 12 points to help the Waves hold off the Division II Coyotes on Friday night. Bell had a game-high 22 points as the Waves (1-2) rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit against the Coyotes (0-1). Pepperdine had a 39-37 lead with 17 minutes left in the second half but recorded only one field goal over the next 9 1/2 minutes as the Coyotes pulled ahead 58-46. Cal State San Bernardino was led by Bryan LeDuc's 17 points.

MEN Miami 86, at Pepperdine 63: James Dews scored 21 points and made five three-pointers to lead the Hurricanes to their sixth consecutive victory. Miami (14-1) never trailed and used a double-digit scoring run in each half to pull away in its first visit to Pepperdine since December 1969. The Hurricanes led, 45-36, at halftime. Keion Bell scored 22 points for Pepperdine (4-12). George, who originally signed a letter of intent with Pepperdine, had 14 points during a 16-2 run to open the second half. Mike Zambri, a member of the two-time Southern Section champion Westlake High golf team, has signed a letter of intent to attend Pepperdine. Zambri is expected to participate in the California State Amateur high school championship at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach on June 21. Pepperdine plays its home matches at North Ranch Country Club, Westlake's home course.

Bryan Hill scored 21 points and Gerald Brown made six free throws in the final 2 1/2 minutes Friday night in Pepperdine's 69-66 victory over Dartmouth in the consolation game of the Lobo Invitational. Hill made nine of 10 shots and had 11 rebounds as Pepperdine held off the Big Green, whose bid to send the game into overtime failed when P.J. Halas missed a three-point shot with three seconds left.

Pepperdine junior center omm'A Givens was suspended for fighting with a teammate at practice Tuesday, leaving the Waves short-handed for their first West Coast Conference trip. Givens will sit out games tonight at Santa Clara and Saturday at San Francisco. Givens, averaging 8.6 points and 3.9 rebounds, will rejoin the team Monday. The 6-foot-11 Givens will be replaced by Kelvin Gibbs, a 6-6 redshirt freshman.

The Cal State Long Beach men's basketball team will try for its third straight victory tonight at 7:30 against Pepperdine at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu. The game will be televised by Prime Ticket. Ron Palmer's 49ers, 11-45 the last two seasons, are 3-2 this year and are coming off victories over Bradley and Houston. The 49ers play at Loyola-Marymount Saturday night.
