FREQUENTLY embattled, drug-addled British rock star Pete Doherty received a glowing review last week from a cultural arbiter with the power to not only derail his career but also take away his freedom: a judge at Thames Magistrates Court in London. Doherty, 27, lead singer of the shambolic indie rock outfit Babyshambles and former frontman of the critically lauded Libertines, faced possible prison time after being caught in August with crack cocaine and a crack pipe.

Pete Doherty was released on bail Friday, a day after his latest arrest for suspected drug possession. The 27-year-old Babyshambles singer was detained in a car Thursday in east London, hours after a judge placed him on probation on separate drug charges. A disheveled-looking Doherty was accompanied by a lawyer as he left a police station where he had spent the night. His only comment to the knot of reporters and photographers: "I feel like smacking you in the face, mate, stay away from me."

A judge in London on Thursday ordered rocker Pete Doherty to attend an 18-month drug rehabilitation program and placed him on two years' probation. Judge Jane McIvor also banned the 27-year-old Babyshambles frontman from driving for six months because of drug possession. Doherty had pleaded guilty last month to seven charges of possessing drugs including heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana, which police said they found when he was stopped once in December and once in January.

Pete Doherty, the sometime boyfriend of Kate Moss, was jailed in London on Friday after pleading guilty to possessing drugs for the second time in a week. The 26-year-old singer was arrested in east London on Thursday by officers who thought he looked "disheveled and suspicious," prosecutors said. He pleaded guilty to heroin possession at Thames Magistrates' Court and was ordered jailed until a hearing on Feb. 8.

Doherty, lead singer with the group Babyshambles, was arrested Saturday while driving through east London, police said. Officers were trying to flag down another car, but Doherty pulled over.
