Oklahoma State outfielder Pete Incaviglia, the NCAA home run and RBI record holder and eighth choice in this year's baseball draft, said Thursday he will break off negotiations with the Montreal Expos. Incaviglia's agent, Bucky Woy, accused the Expos management of inconsistent and unprofessional bargaining practices and said his client wants permission to talk with other major league teams.

Pete Incaviglia, exiled to Japan a year ago, couldn't find anyone interested in him this winter. It took coaxing, cajoling and persuasion merely to get the Philadelphia Phillies to give him a non-guaranteed, $300,000 minor-league contract. Even when he made the Phillies in spring training, he was only going to be a reserve, watching Darren Daulton play left field. Everything changed the first week of the season when Daulton went on the disabled list and said his career could be over.

Phillie pitcher Danny Jackson--who will face Pat Hentgen in Game 3--said his wife wasn't too happy when he took off his shirt and struck a bodybuilding pose on the pitcher's mound during the pennant celebration at Veterans Stadium. "She said she is going to use it for the kids," Jackson said. "She's going to get a normal picture of me and tell them, 'This is your dad.' Then she is going to show them the one of me that night, and tell them: 'This is your dad on drugs. Don't do drugs.'

Minnesota right-hander Bert Blyleven allowed five home runs Saturday in a 14-1 loss to the Texas Rangers to set an American League record of 44 homers yielded in a season. The old mark of 43 was set by Pedro Ramos of Washington in 1957. The major league record belongs to Robin Roberts of Philadelphia, who yielded 46 in 1956.

Detroit Tiger outfielder Pete Incaviglia was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right wrist. Incaviglia injured the wrist during a bench-clearing brawl at Boston on July 6. He aggravated the wrist over the weekend. To replace Incaviglia, the Tigers recalled right-handed pitcher John Kiely from triple-A Toledo. Kiely, 26, was 2-2 with two saves and a 2.12 ERA in 34 appearances with Toledo, all in relief.

Breakdown: The Minnesota Twins lost 11 of 12 games before beating Cleveland, malfunctioning on all fronts. A defense that last year set a major league record for fewest errors in a season, 84, made 11 in the 12 games, including five by third baseman Gary Gaetti, who made seven all last year. The offense, having produced 89 runs in a 9-5 start, produced 31 in the 1-11 collapse. Starting pitchers were 1-8 in the 12 games and relievers 0-3. Payroll: With the acquisition of Jesse Barfield, the New York Yankees are paying five right fielders $4,576,037, including Dave Winfield, who is on the disabled list, and Gary Ward, who was released.

Pete Incaviglia came off the Oklahoma State campus to have a big rookie season last year for the Texas Rangers, but his 33 home runs and 88 runs batted in went relatively unnoticed. It was the 23-year-old outfielder's misfortune to break into the American League in the same year as Wally Joyner of the Angels and Jose Canseco of the Oakland A's. While Joyner and Canseco have had some problems getting going this season, Incaviglia has ignored the so-called sophomore jinx.

Seldom has such a large group of players burst into major league baseball with the success achieved by the rookie class of 1986. Whether Jose Canseco, Todd Worrell, Wally Joyner, Pete Incaviglia and Cory Snyder can proceed to long and distinguished careers is the next question. Many players, particularly young ones, scoff at the sophomore jinx as a rainy-day invention by some baseball writer in the distant past.
