Spectrum, Caserta Part Company: Spectrum Information Technologies Inc. said it has ended its contract with Peter Caserta, the company's president who had been on leave since five associates were arrested last spring. The company also named four new directors, completing a restructuring of its board. Spectrum, holder of patents for wireless data transmission, gained attention for hiring former Apple Computer chief John Sculley as its CEO and chairman last fall.

Former Spectrum Chief Caserta Indicted: A federal prosecutor in New York charged Peter Caserta, former president of Manhasset, N.Y.-based Spectrum Information Technologies Inc., with defrauding several hundred companies of more than $6 million. Nine former employees of the Caserta Group, a privately held investment firm, were also named in the 102-count mail and wire fraud indictment.

Spectrum Executive Under Investigation: Peter Caserta, 51, chief executive of embattled Spectrum Information Technologies Inc., is under federal investigation for mail fraud. A federal grand jury in Brooklyn is also investigating Caserta Group, a business founded by Caserta in 1988, according to a criminal subpoena. U.S. postal inspectors are investigating claims made by Caserta Group to prospective clients seeking financing. Caserta's private organization is in the same Manhasset, N.Y.

John Sculley and Spectrum Information Technologies have agreed to drop the lawsuits they filed against one another after Sculley quit the company last month--thus halting, at least temporarily, one of the most colorful public spats in the business world.

It may have been one of the worst career moves of all time. In October, John Sculley--having worn out his welcome at Apple Computer--joined a small, unproven, communications company called Spectrum Information Technologies. On Monday, he resigned--and filed a lawsuit against the executive he says recruited him to the job under false pretenses. It's a bizarre, tragicomic saga that may permanently blacken the reputation of one of the nation's most prominent business executives.
