Phil Jackson won 11 titles as an NBA coach, but the Lakers' victory in seven games over the Boston Celtics in 2010 stands out as his favorite. "For me, this was the most gratifying victory of my career," writes Jackson in his upcoming book, "Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success. " "It had been a trying season marred by inconsistency and troublesome injuries, but in the end the players were a study in courage and teamwork," the Lakers' former coach said. Jackson and the Lakers fell in 2008 to the Celtics in the NBA Finals. The team rebounded in 2009, defeating the Orlando Magic for their fourth title in the Jackson era. The Lakers overcame a 3-2 deficit in 2010 before winning the final two games over the Celtics at Staples Center.

Phil Jackson and Jerry West did not have a strong relationship when the two were with the Lakers. Speaking at the Alex Theatre in Glendale at his "Live Talks Los Angeles" event last week, Jackson gave his account of the time he asked West to leave the Lakers' locker room. Without saying which game (it's believed to be during the Western Conference Finals against Portland Trail Blazers in 2000), Jackson felt his team needed a serious talk after a difficult night. "The Lakers were really struggling, not enjoying playing together," said Jackson.

When the Lakers announced that they chose Mike D'Antoni as their next coach, Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash poured their support behind the man that will take over at helm. But one important voice in the Laker community remained mum. Magic Johnson. Johnson broke his silence Wednesday through Twitter . "The reason I haven't tweeted in 2 days is because I've been mourning Phil Jackson not being hired as the Lakers head coach," Johnson wrote. "My mother always taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. " Jackson was considering coming out of retirement for a third stint with the Lakers after Mike Brown was fired Friday.

While the Lakers will begin their postseason at home, their dutiful coach has already strolled into an enemy camp, pitched a tent, started a fire, caused a mess. While the Lakers will host Oklahoma City , Phil Jackson will begin the playoffs inside Kevin Durant's head. "Oh, no, here we go again," former Laker Rick Fox said with a laugh. Oh, yes, here we go again. Casually, caustically, it happens every spring. For brief moments in each of his 10 playoff runs here, the star whisperer has become a bleacher heckler, lobbing unexpected shots down at unsuspecting opponents, testing their patience, judging their mettle.

* THE NUMBERS: Record-tying nine NBA championships as coach. * THE QUOTE: "It's a story of reconciliation, redemption, of reuniting -- a lot of things in this make for a wonderful opportunity for the team, the Lakers and myself."

The "We Want Phil!" chants were heard again at Staples Center. Will Lakers fans and players get their wish? Another day passed without Phil Jackson and the Lakers reuniting, though the players weren't preoccupied in a 103-90 victory Sunday over the Sacramento Kings. Then Kobe Bryant reiterated his desire for Jackson to return, saying he would be "excited," seemingly uncaring that the coaching search would seep into Monday. "Nothing concerns me about this organization," he said.

There was a reason Phil Jackson could be seen balancing a large stack of books earlier this week at a Los Angeles bookstore. The Lakers coach bought books for each of his players and distributed them before their eight-game trip, part of an annual ritual before a Jackson-coached team begins a long winter trip. Kobe Bryant , who rolls his eyes whenever Jackson gives him a book, probably won't be perusing what Jackson handed him: "Montana 1948," a Larry Watson novel about a middle-class Montana family torn apart by a scandal in the late 1940s.
