Mark Cuban couldn't resist the urge to take aim with two of his favorite Lakers targets back at Staples Center on Tuesday. The Dallas Mavericks owner was complimentary of Shaquille O'Neal on the night the former Lakers center's jersey was retired, but he gleefully zinged former coach Phil Jackson. "I have great respect for Phil too, Jeanie's husband as he'll now be known," Cuban said, referencing Jeanie Buss, the Lakers' executive vice president and governor who votes on issues at owners' meetings.

The Lakers retired Shaquille O'Neal's No. 34 jersey at halftime on Tuesday as the team hosted the Dallas Mavericks. "The most gifted specimen I've ever seen play this game," said Kobe Bryant in a prepared video. "Historical, the run we had together. " Former Lakers coach Phil Jackson spoke next (to a Staples Center crowd chanting "We want Phil"), reminiscing about the fun times he had with O'Neal and the Lakers. "How much fun we had, the wins, the titles," said Jackson.

The other day I wrote a funny story, which failed to get a laugh out of Phil Jackson's agent, Todd Musburger. The way I heard it, UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero called Musburger's office, and talked to his son, Brian, about Jackson helping UCLA find a replacement for Ben Howland. Musburger put out a news release after I wrote about it and said I was wrong. I think everyone understands I am never wrong. I asked Guerrero on Tuesday if he had talked to Jackson's agent.

Funny story the way I hear it. Once UCLA failed to land Virginia Commonwealth Coach Shaka Smart and Butler's Brad Stevens, Athletic Director Dan Guerrero talked to Phil Jackson's representative. Guerrero didn't want Jackson as coach, but rather to have him lead the search for a new UCLA basketball coach. Jackson was agreeable. Guerrero talked to Jackson's agent about having a news conference to announce Jackson was onboard. Jackson's agent told Guerrero what it would cost to hire him as consultant.

At Jerry Buss' memorial service Feb. 21, more than a dozen speakers honored the longtime Lakers owner, who died Feb. 18 at age 80 after a battle with cancer. Below are some of the highlights from the service, which included speeches by some current and former Lakers legends. MAGIC JOHNSON Johnson played for the Lakers from 1979 to 1991 and returned in the 1995-96 season. He and Buss hung out often, but Johnson didn't realize just how close they had become until he contracted HIV. "When I announced HIV, I knew he was really a father figure in my life," Johnson said.

The hand that once wrote about daily NBA schedules on a greaseboard in the Lakers' locker room now composes daily specials on a surfboard propped against a sunset-colored truck. Kona Sunset Shrimp Tacos, two for $7. The distinctive voice that once boomed through the halls of Staples Center now is heard from underneath a tiny window; instead of ordering Lakers players into their uniforms, it is now taking office workers' orders for lunch.
