Lax security and sloppy record-keeping at U.S. Army posts in Europe expose billions of dollars worth of military supplies, including some of the nation's most sophisticated weapons, to theft by terrorist groups or diversion for profit, a congressional study released Wednesday warned. At one post in West Germany, it took supply officers almost a year to locate 24 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles in their inventory after the Army requested them for training exercises elsewhere.

I have a confession to make. I watch a lot of TV. Enter my home on any given weeknight, and you'll find me on the couch with a blanket, a remote and something to eat. Don't get me wrong. It's not that I don't have a love for the written word. Being a writer affords me the passion, if not the necessity, to pick up the paper, a book or a magazine and read to my heart's content.

Former FBI agent Robert Philip Hanssen has told government investigators that his 22-year career as a Russian spy was driven by money as he sought to cover house payments and parochial school tuition for his six children, law enforcement sources said Tuesday. Hanssen's admission, disclosed in a high-level report due out Thursday, marks the first time he has divulged his motivation for spying.

The issue of terrorism poses a challenge, not just to this president or this Congress, but to our whole political culture. The United States is no longer isolated from the rest of the world. We are the target of foreign terrorists who hate America and domestic terrorists who hate government. Just since Bill Clinton became president, we've experienced the World Trade Center bombing, in 1993, the Oklahoma City disaster, in 1995, and, this year, the attack on U.S.

Push finally came to shove over the controversial film "The Last Temptation of Christ" late Friday when a scuffle broke out at the MainPlace mall in Santa Ana between security guards and Christians protesting the film's exhibition. One man, Michael Sanders, was detained for allegedly assaulting a guard, but the struggle was mostly ideological rather than physical, security personnel said, and Sanders was freed.

The Army should further improve its new safeguards against thefts of ammunition and explosives, Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) said Friday. While praising the Army for improvements it has made to reduce thefts of such things as ammunition, grenades and anti-personnel mines, Wilson said even tighter controls are necessary. His recommendations, which stemmed from a General Accounting Office report that examined problems at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

What qualifies Jeane Kirkpatrick, who never served in a foreign post, to pontificate at such length on the security scandal in Moscow? Her observations seem to me largely superficial or irrelevant. She seems to suggest that this was--or the media should have made it--a bigger event than Iranscam. No way! However regrettable and costly, it was essentially a housekeeping lapse, while Iranscam is a major foreign disaster of ever-widening dimensions. In my own Foreign Service experience, I knew many Marine guards well and once supervised them while serving as post security officer.

Poverty comes in all colors! But the perception is that it is a condition only of black America, and your marvelous series on poverty supports that perception. Yes, blacks are disproportionately represented among the poor, and among welfare recipients, and among drug users. But that doesn't mean that they are the majority in those situations. On the contrary, it is whites who are the largest number of poor, homeless, and welfare recipients. Why does this perception exist? Because you, along with McNeil Lehrer, and other "responsible" segments of the media turn white America off with photos of blacks almost exclusively.
