Greg Kurstin is one of pop music's most in-demand songwriter-producers, a proven hit maker who works closely with A-list singers like Pink and Kelly Clarkson. The year was 1982, and Kurstin - an L.A. native who grew up near the Getty Center - had formed a middle-school band with Frank Zappa's son Dweezil. Interacting with Frank was no problem; the late rock experimentalist walked around the Zappa home like a normal guy, Kurstin says.

A lot has happened in the seven months since Nicki Minaj issued her sophomore effort, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.” The pop-rap minx has gone on her first headlining tour, issued a perfume (a clothing line is also in the works) and joined the judges' panel on “American Idol.” As her profile continues to rise, Minaj has also seen her artistry scrutinized. Her sophomore effort fueled contention among critics and rap purists, many of whom felt the platinum-selling femcee had turned her back on hip-hop in search of pop success.

Orange County was once an instant synonym for Republican power, and the GOP's dominance looked impregnable. Now, battered by the recent election results and dismayed by the slow, steady decline in party registration, Republicans here are struggling to craft a new strategy. The percentage of registered Republicans has eroded - it now stands at 41% - and the party has long since lost control of the political districts that envelop the county seat of Santa Ana, a Latino-dominated city of 330,000, and surrounding communities in the county's core.

When Heidi Klum introduced Pink at the American Music Awards Sunday night she described her as "a rock star, a poet, a fashionista and a new mom. " Considering the show-stealing performance that Pink unleashed seconds later, Klum might well have added: "and a dancer, a contortionist and a future member of Cirque du Soleil. LA JOLLA - Futuristic theatrical effects are deployed like a hypnotist's pocket watch in "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. " But the real mesmerizing aspect of this new musical at La Jolla Playhouse, inspired by the music of the psychedelic rock band the Flaming Lips, is the way it sounds. Our ears are delighted at a higher level than our eyes - or our minds, for that matter. The show's sophistication lies in the floating lyricism of its score, which can be categorized in that Tower Records-era indie catch-all known as "alternative rock.

The American Music Awards know their place in the landscape of music-related award shows. The ceremony doesn't have the prestige of the Grammys or the cheeky irreverence of MTV's Video Music Awards - and certainly not the ratings of either. PHOTOS: Full results: American Music Awards winners list But where the show, which aired Sunday evening on ABC, excels is its ability to provide pop spectacle. Splashy commercials leading into the program featured a simple tagline: "Your playlist goes live.

The NFL has been awash in pink during October in consideration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- pink towels, sweat bands and protective sleeves, and pink shoes, shoelaces and gloves. When the New York Jets play host to the Miami Dolphins in a key AFC East game at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, pink penalty flags will be flying thanks to 11-year-old Dante Cano, who wrote NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell with the idea. "My name is Dante Cano. I am 11 years old and I am from Marlboro, New Jersey," Cano wrote.

The presidential debate Tuesday night drew a lot of attention for a lot of reasons, but in some quarters much of the chatter afterward was about the coincidence of the contenders' spouses both wearing bright pink dresses. Michelle Obama's pink dress and jacket were by Michael Kors, while Ann Romney's short-sleeve dress was by Oscar de la Renta. They may have both opted for pink because it is a happy color -- or perhaps it was a nod to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
