A day after winning the franchise's first Pacific Division title, the Clippers let it all soak in by resting Monday. The Clippers have a 51-26 record, the best in franchise history. They swept the four-game series from the Lakers, the first time that has been done since the 1974-75 season when the franchise was known as the Buffalo Braves. All in all, the Clippers, who resume practice Tuesday, feel upbeat about their play and where they are headed. "This is how it felt in the beginning of the season," Jamal Crawford said.

Aware that the St. Louis Cardinals already were cruising to another win, the Dodgers took the field Friday knowing their slim playoff chances were ebbing even further. But the Dodgers did their best to keep their postseason hopes alive with an 8-0 win over the Colorado Rockies, led by another stellar outing from starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw and home runs by Shane Victorino and Bobby Abreu. That kept the Dodgers three games behind St. Louis for the second National League wild-card berth, the Dodgers' lone hope of reaching the playoffs.

You'll have to forgive the nicest guy in the NBA if he ignores your complimentary tweets for several weeks. Jamal Crawford is not being rude. He is, to put it in his words, "#onamission. " The Clippers guard has vowed to stay off Twitter during the playoffs, apologizing to his roughly 279,600 followers with a 140-character missive on the eve of his team's series opener against the Memphis Grizzlies. "Anything worth having is worth working hard for, thank you guys for all the support," Crawford tweeted Friday.

After two years of coming up short, once because of a miracle touchdown by its opponent on the final play of the final regular-season game, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame is back in the Pac-5 playoffs armed with an offense that's playing as well as any in the division. And a big reason is the strong leadership of 6-foot-6 senior quarterback Kelly Hilinski, who's improvement in accuracy and judgment has led to scholarship offers from Colorado, North Carolina State and Arkansas, among others.

In addition to being manager of the San Diego Padres, Bud Black has a college degree in finance. So he knows a little something about math. And the numbers he'll see in Thursday morning's newspaper won't be encouraging. Even though Chris Young and four relievers combined to beat the Chicago Cubs, 3-0, on Wednesday, the Padres still trail San Francisco in the National League West by two games because the Giants also won, beating Arizona, 3-1, behind an 11-strikeout performance by Tim Lincecum (16-10)

Nobody believed in them. Only the people in their locker room thought they could get this far. They are a team of destiny, and Super Bowl XLV is just one win away. They are the New York Jets. And the Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. With all due respect, where's all the respect that's due? Each of the four NFL teams in this weekend's conference championship games have at some point claimed they have been overlooked, undervalued, ignored by all but those rare true believers.

— The Dodgers are expecting Clayton Kershaw to return from a hip injury and pitch Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are also anticipating Matt Kemp will have recovered from his shoulder problems and be back in the lineup. "It has to be Tuesday," Manager Don Mattingly said. That is, Tuesday must be the day the Dodgers start winning games at an abnormally high rate if they want to give themselves a chance to reach the playoffs. The Dodgers have lost nine of 15 games since they added Adrian Gonzalez to a lineup that already included Kemp, Hanley Ramirez and Andre Ethier.

SEATTLE - It was a common refrain - a mantra, really - in April and early May, when Albert Pujols couldn't hit, the offense couldn't score and the bullpen blew six of its first seven save opportunities. "It's not how you start," the Angels kept saying, "it's how you finish. " Well, sometimes it is how you start. The Angels beat the Seattle Mariners, 8-4, in Safeco Field on Monday night to improve to 27-11 since Aug. 21, the best record in baseball in that span. But they were 18-25 in the first seven weeks of the season, and because of that awful start, they're now finished.
