An Australian world poker champion won't have to ante up to the tax collector. In July, mortgage broker Joseph Hachem won $7.5 million in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. In Australia, a professional gambler is liable for taxes on offshore winnings, but lawyer Peter Donovan successfully argued that poker was Hachem's hobby, not his profession, when he won. The next hand might not go his way, because poker has become a bigger part of his life.

Lady Gaga is roaring back. Mere days after Katy Perry unleashed "Roar" -- the lead single from her upcoming "Prism" album -- the eccentric pop superstar rush-released her own single Monday to YouTube and iTunes, a week earlier than she'd originally planned. "A POP MUSIC EMERGENCY IS UNDERWAY," she wrote with characteristic drama on her website. "DUE TO HACKERS AN ABUNDANCE OF LOW/HIGH QUALITY LEAKS...WE ISSUE THIS POP MUSIC EMERGENCY...MONSTERS SPREAD THE WORD. " PHOTOS: Lady Gaga through the years "Applause" is a stomping dance track with little trace of the self-conscious hair-metal stylings that defined 2011's "Born This Way"; it shares more with the sleek Euro-house vibe of Lady Gaga's early hits, including " Poker Face " and " Bad Romance . " But that doesn't mean she's returning to the days before the world followed her every move.

While Gen. Pervez Musharraf was preparing this month to issue a sweeping emergency decree, his No. 2 in the military was nowhere to be seen in the corridors of power. Instead, Gen. Ashfaq Kiani was far afield, visiting Pakistani troops engaged in a difficult and demoralizing struggle with Islamic insurgents in the jagged hills along the Afghan border.

For Rihanna, a Sunday sit-down on "Oprah's Next Chapter" might well have been called "A Whole New Can of Worms. " The Barbados native revealed to Oprah Winfrey that she and ex-boyfriend Chris Brown have built a very close friendship, and that it is awkward for the singer to see him, as she's still in love with him. "We're very, very close friends. We built a trust again and that's it. We love each other and we probably always will ... that's not something you can shut off, if you've ever been in love," she said (video below)

It seems that David Jones fancies himself a card shark, playing host to a game of poker at his home every Saturday night, and while it's my civic duty to pass that address on to the local vice squad, I find it amusing that David, who prefers to be called, "Deacon," is about to feel what it's like to be sacked.

Masks are not new in drama. Their use began with the Greeks. In this century the use was made memorable by Eugene O'Neill, with masks used in communicating to the outside world, their removal the sign of a character's speaking his inner thoughts. In real life we all wear masks, often different ones for different groups of associates. That's the point of Cornelia Koehl's "Poker Face," opening tonight at the Little Victory Theatre.

The Dirty Secret Play used to be constructed in long, developing dramatic arcs, usually involving families. By the end, the clan was laid bare, beaten and purged. Think of the father, for instance, in Arthur Miller's "All My Sons," with his secret about his murderous engineering scams. That was a Dirty Big Secret Play. In the '90s, it has evolved into the Dirty Little Secret Play--so little, in fact, that the secrets aren't even worth the wait.

The secret to Ken Cloude's success is he acts like Greg Maddux but pitches like Randy Johnson. Cloude, the JetHawks' ace right-hander, is the combination of poise and power. He blows 92-mph fastballs past hitters, then trots off the mound without so much as a peep or a pounded fist. When he does get hit, you can't tell by looking at his emotionless face. Of course, there hasn't been much opportunity to observe the latter in his brief pro career.

Chris Fargis thought his big job interview was over. But when the partners at Wall Street upstart Toro Trading finished with their questions, they broke out a deck of cards and a green-felt card table. Mind playing a few hands of poker? It was a final test, and Fargis was relieved. The 30-year-old never went to business school or even took a finance class. But he knew poker. He had made a living playing the game online for six years from his Manhattan apartment, betting on up to eight hands at a time.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. - For some of the families recovering from the July 20 shooting rampage at a movie theater, Monday's court proceeding was a chance to show suspect James E. Holmes that they were still strong and weren't going to be intimidated. Prosecutors charged Holmes with 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of criminal intent to commit murder in connection with the rampage at an Aurora, Colo. movie theater showing “The Dark Knight Rises.” Twelve people were killed and 58 were injured in the attack.

Though the cursory nods were there -- Britney Spears and Eminem were both recognized multiple times -- Tuesday's MTV Video Music Award nominations were about christening a new star. Synth-pop newcomer Lady Gaga was nominated nine times, tying with Beyonce for the most nods. Yet whereas Beyonce's nominations went solely to her relatively minimalist "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," a stark celebration of choreography, MTV spread the love for the '80s-inspired songs of Lady Gaga, who was recognized for the "Poker Face" and "Paparazzi" videos, both exercises in excess.

With a handbag over a shoulder and a bounce to her step, 47-year-old school psychologist Lisa Klenner bounded through the doors of the small casino in the Mojave Desert. Gerald Morris, the floor man of Diamond Jim's, greeted her with a familiar smile and coaxed her to a table where a game of poker was already underway.
