Police searching for a bank robber shot and killed the suspect in a crowded department store cafe in Bellevue. The unidentified man was shot in a back hallway of the Nordstrom Grill, where he had been sitting after apparently changing his clothes in a bathroom, Bellevue Police spokeswoman Marcia Harnden said. No one else was injured. Police were searching the mall after the robbery of a Bank of America branch a few blocks away. Harnden said the man pulled a gun when confronted and drew fire.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and killed a British citizen who "violently assaulted" him after he was stopped for questioning in Laurier, Wash., officials said. Gary Mayers, 34, of London, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Bill Strassberger of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The Border Patrol is a unit of the INS. Mayers had been deported to Britain last month and was seen hopping the border fence about five miles south of the Canadian border in northeast Washington state.

A teenager who threatened to blow up the Bonneville Dam in an extortion plot was shot to death in Stevenson, Wash., by an FBI agent when he arrived at the dam to pick up the ransom, authorities said. Nathaniel Milligan, 18, died in the confrontation near a visitors' center at the dam, about 40 miles east of Portland, Ore. Two hours earlier, tourists found a tape recorder containing a bomb threat and a demand for $15,000.
