San Diego police Thursday arrested six juveniles they believe were responsible for four drive-by shootings in South San Diego Wednesday. Police spokesman Dave Cohen said five of the youths were arrested in a stolen car by members of the police gang unit. The arrest was made in South San Diego. Cohen said that at the time of the arrest the five juveniles were armed with three 9-millimeter automatic pistols, two .357 magnum revolvers and a .45 caliber automatic pistol. Police found a video cassette recorder and jewelry believed taken from a burglary in the car, Cohen said.

Five reputed gang members are in custody in connection with the shooting last week of Paul Holmes, a Southeast San Diego resident who was listed in good condition Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, authorities said. Police on Monday arrested a 17-year-old boy and 19-year-old Jovee Smallwood. Three other suspects, 18-year-old Andy Villareal, a 17-year-old juvenile and a 15-year-old juvenile, were arrested last week, but Smallwood is believed to be the triggerman, police said. The youths had gone to the Holmes residence in the 300 block of Northgate Street on May 8 to visit Holmes' son. Police said Holmes' son went outside but, when an argument ensued, Paul Holmes called his son back inside.

A 23-year-old man was listed in serious condition Thursday after being shot by a San Diego police officer who thought the man was reaching for a gun, authorities said. Vincent Taylor had his hands in the air as he was being arrested on suspicion of drug activity, but suddenly dropped his hands toward his waistband, prompting Officer Al Dobynes to shoot Taylor in the left side, Lt. Phil Jarvis said. Taylor was unarmed. Dobynes and Officer Marc Hoffman were on patrol in Southeast San Diego about 1 a.m. Thursday when they saw a car parked in an alley near 44th and T streets.

A man apparently distraught over the death early Saturday morning of his father at the Mission Bay Memorial Hospital returned with a handgun later in the day and sprayed the emergency room with bullets, police said, killing a nurse and a hospital trainee and wounding two others--a doctor and the father of a patient. The man identified by police as Bradford Warren Powers Jr., 46, of La Jolla, called police from a pay phone about an hour after the 5 p.m. shooting and turned himself in.
