A 24-year-old man was shot to death Sunday and his companion was wounded when occupants of a passing car opened fire on a group of people standing in an alley in East San Diego, police said. Cesar Dominguez of the 4400 block of G Street was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before midnight, police spokesman Dave Cohen said. Dominguez's body was found in the alley west of Escuela Street and Hilltop Drive, Cohen said. Police also found German Lara, 32, of the 300 block of 35th Street wounded nearby.

A teen-age escapee from a juvenile camp in Campo was arrested early Wednesday morning after leading San Diego police on a high-speed chase, authorities said. Police said the youth, 15, was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of auto theft, reckless driving, evading a police officer, driving without a license, hit-and-run and providing false information. He also had an outstanding warrant from Rancho del Rayo, a juvenile camp. The boy had escaped from the minimum-security camp on March 31, where he was being held on burglary charges, a Juvenile Hall spokesman said.

San Diego police officers shot and killed a man Monday night in San Ysidro after he twice tried to run them over with his car, authorities said. Alvaro Vega-Haro, 39, of Tijuana, died of a single gunshot wound suffered after two on-duty officers fired several shots at him in the 100 block of Blanche Street, police spokesman Dave Cohen said. The officers had tried to pull over Vega-Haro's car shortly after 9 p.m. when they noticed two men fighting in the front seat. As the officers pursued the car, a passenger fell out the car's side window, Cohen said.

Five reputed gang members are in custody in connection with the shooting last week of Paul Holmes, a Southeast San Diego resident who was listed in good condition Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, authorities said. Police on Monday arrested a 17-year-old boy and 19-year-old Jovee Smallwood. Three other suspects, 18-year-old Andy Villareal, a 17-year-old juvenile and a 15-year-old juvenile, were arrested last week, but Smallwood is believed to be the triggerman, police said. The youths had gone to the Holmes residence in the 300 block of Northgate Street on May 8 to visit Holmes' son. Police said Holmes' son went outside but, when an argument ensued, Paul Holmes called his son back inside.

San Diego police Thursday arrested six juveniles they believe were responsible for four drive-by shootings in South San Diego Wednesday. Police spokesman Dave Cohen said five of the youths were arrested in a stolen car by members of the police gang unit. The arrest was made in South San Diego. Cohen said that at the time of the arrest the five juveniles were armed with three 9-millimeter automatic pistols, two .357 magnum revolvers and a .45 caliber automatic pistol. Police found a video cassette recorder and jewelry believed taken from a burglary in the car, Cohen said.

A 23-year-old man was listed in serious condition Thursday after being shot by a San Diego police officer who thought the man was reaching for a gun, authorities said. Vincent Taylor had his hands in the air as he was being arrested on suspicion of drug activity, but suddenly dropped his hands toward his waistband, prompting Officer Al Dobynes to shoot Taylor in the left side, Lt. Phil Jarvis said. Taylor was unarmed. Dobynes and Officer Marc Hoffman were on patrol in Southeast San Diego about 1 a.m. Thursday when they saw a car parked in an alley near 44th and T streets.

A man apparently distraught over the death early Saturday morning of his father at the Mission Bay Memorial Hospital returned with a handgun later in the day and sprayed the emergency room with bullets, police said, killing a nurse and a hospital trainee and wounding two others--a doctor and the father of a patient. The man identified by police as Bradford Warren Powers Jr., 46, of La Jolla, called police from a pay phone about an hour after the 5 p.m. shooting and turned himself in.
