A high court sentenced 14 blacks to death today for the 1985 murder of a policeman during anti-government rioting, despite finding that only four of the defendants actively participated in the killing. Invoking a controversial "common purpose" doctrine, Justice Jan Basson delivered the death penalty to 14 of 25 defendants after a nearly four-year trial. The 11 other defendants will be sentenced next week. The 14, including a former mayor, a nurse and an elderly couple with 10 children, were found guilty with no extenuating circumstances for the Nov. 13, 1985, murder of black policeman Jetta Sethwala who was chased from his home, beaten to death and later set ablaze in Paballelo township.

The IQ requirements of Beverly Hills cops may need reassessment. You don't have to be overly bright to observe that someone who looks like Zsa Zsa Gabor, driving a Rolls-Royce, does not pose a threat of illegal firearms, drugs, bodily harm, or whatever. Besides, how can you stay mad at someone who calls you "that gorgeous policeman?" JOHN DEGATINA Los Angeles

The best car safety device is a rear-view mirror with a cop in it. --Dudley Moore Lightning doesn't strike twice, although if you're in Ukraine it just might. You'd think I'd learned my lesson after Thursday's near-miss with a Ukranian prison cell. (I wonder what my friend the Ukranian policeman is doing with my 50 euro fine.) From this encounter, I learned again that speeding is bad. This is a good thing to know on a 10,000-mile road trip called the Mongol Rally that started Saturday in Britain and ends in about five weeks at Ulan Bator, Mongolia.  Speeding also happens to be a crime in most countries, except maybe Germany where we have the autobahn.
