A booby-trapped taxi blew three policemen to pieces in Bilbao today in the bloodiest Basque guerrilla ambush in 18 months, officials said. A 110-pound bomb went off in the trunk of the car as three bomb disposal experts were trying to defuse it. The blast sent human remains flying 50 yards away. Four other policemen, a fireman and four civilians were injured in the attack. Officials blamed the ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom) guerrillas fighting for Basque independence for the bomb.

Three off-duty policemen were stoned, beaten and hanged in a central Bolivian town after residents said they tried to extort money from a man driving without license plates, news media reported. Ten people, including the three policemen, have been lynched this year in Bolivia. Most were suspected thieves. Deputy Interior Minister Ruben Gamarra called the latest lynching a "cowardly assassination" and said there would be an investigation into the possible participation of local authorities in Epizana, about 370 miles southeast of La Paz.

A Yugoslav deserter who killed two policemen while on the run from his army unit was shot and killed by militiamen Monday after a car chase in northwest Yugoslavia, the official Tanjug news agency said. Several hundred troops had pursued Bojan Plut, 19, since he fled from the Ljubljana Barracks on May 1 armed with an automatic rifle and 700 rounds of ammunition. He ambushed a car carrying two policemen Saturday, shooting both to death.

An explosion in eastern Afghanistan killed two NATO soldiers and one civilian, while other attacks left seven policemen dead, officials said. Two other North Atlantic Treaty Organization soldiers were wounded when the blast hit a patrol in Khowst province, the alliance said. It did not release their nationalities.

A battle lasting more than five hours between Maoist rebels using mortars and machine guns and police in eastern India killed 24 policemen and 25 rebels, authorities said. The rebel assault, in a jungle in Chhattisgarh state, was the latest in a region where widespread poverty has fueled a lengthy insurgency.
