Charles Bowshier pleaded guilty Aug. 13 to bludgeoning and decapitating Donald Bowshier, 29, with pruning shears during a Feb. 5 argument in the family home. Bowshier, who was captured by police after fleeing the murder scene, told them the person he killed was not his brother.

Pomona and Canyon filled those roles Thursday night, when the visiting Red Devils raced to an 18-7 season-opening victory in front of 550 at El Modena High School. Pomona running back Eric Shyne carried the ball 18 times for 226 yards and two touchdowns, including an 85-yard jaunt with 8:39 remaining to put the game out of reach.
