Procrastinators are in luck. The Internal Revenue Service extended the tax filing deadline until Monday, and several San Fernando Valley post offices will be open late that day to accept last-minute returns. Because April 15--the traditional filing date--falls on a Saturday, the government is giving taxpayers two extra days to file their returns.

Twelve post offices and one contract postal service window will remain open until midnight Thursday for last-minute mailing of tax returns. "It's a big night for us," Postal Service spokesman George Marsh said. "It's kind of like Christmas rush all rolled into one night." Last year, 50% more mail passed through the Santa Ana post office on April 15 than on an average day, he said.

Four post offices in Ventura County will open Sunday and Dec. 18 to help shorten lines during the U. S. Postal Service's busiest time of the year, officials said. The four offices open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays are: the East Ventura Station, 41 S. Wake Forest Ave.; Oxnard main office, 1961 N. C St.; Simi Valley main office, 2551 N. Galena Ave., and the Thousand Oaks main office, 3435 Thousand Oaks Blvd. Those offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Many post offices will be closed for at least the next two Saturdays and new construction projects will be cut by half as part of a package of budget-cutting measures, the U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday. Saturday mail delivery will continue, but as many as half of the nation's post offices will be closed this Saturday and Jan. 2, Postmaster General Preston R. Tisch said. In addition, service could be further reduced with closings of as much as one half-day each week, he said.

To make the holidays a little less hectic, the Postal Service will keep several post offices throughout Ventura County open on Sundays. Officials said they picked the larger post offices that were also near shopping areas to remain open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and 21. The following offices will be open those dates, as well as from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays--except for the Conejo Village Mall station, which is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Twenty-six San Fernando Valley post offices will be open earlier on Saturdays and, to celebrate, the Encino post office will give away clocks this morning. The new hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, will begin today at most post offices in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, according to postal authorities. Every 15 minutes this morning, the Encino Post Office at 5805 White Oak Ave. will give away a clock featuring the images of popular stamps. The U.S.
