UCLA tight end Morrell Presley and cornerback Courtney Viney will transfer, according to the school. Presley was considered a coup when he committed to UCLA. Bruins' Coach Rick Neuheisel went head to head with USC's Pete Carroll and was able to lure him to Westwood. But Presley, ranked the top tight end in the nation by some scouting services, did not develop and became mired in off-the-field troubles. Presley was suspended for a game after violating an unspecified team rule his freshman season.

The following is a blog documenting two Los Angeles Times editors' attempts to lose weight. It all began on Jan. 10 . My weight-loss partner, Tony, is turning into Elvis Presley. Well, he's going to Vegas. And he'll probably have a few dozen grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches. You can see it a mile away. He just quit something called the Cookie Diet (after being on it for about 10 days), ate an entire box of chocolates yesterday and is now heading to Las Vegas for a long weekend.

Ultra-deluxe box sets for Miles Davis, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams and others are priced at up to $1,200. Scanning the upper stratosphere of this year's end-of-the-year holiday-centric music releases, it's tempting to think some record company execs decided it's time to head into full kamikaze-dive mode. Despite so much news revolving around the record industry's struggles to sell 99-cent singles and $9.99 album downloads, several labels have recently cooked up ultra-deluxe box sets for Miles Davis, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams and others priced at $200 up to $1,200.

Expectations at RCA Records couldn't have been much lower 20 years ago when a Danish record executive suggested putting together a box set exclusively of 1950s recordings by one of the label's artists who had been dead for more than a decade. Even though the artist in question happened to be Elvis Presley, there was little hope that a significant number of people would have much interest in a set encompassing five hours of music and 140 songs ? only a small percentage of which had been hits ?

Morrell Presley and Josh Smith were suspended for UCLA's game at Oregon on Oct. 21 for "a violation of team rules," Coach Rick Neuheisel said Tuesday. The official news release said "due to federal and state student privacy laws, UCLA will have no further comment on the matter. " However, after practice Tuesday, Neuheisel said: "I'm disappointed in both kids, and for both kids, hopefully they will learn the valuable lesson. " The suspensions marked UCLA's first day of preparation to face Oregon.

"Nashville Chrome" is Rick Bass' 25th book — at this stage in the game, there's no such thing as a fresh start …and thank goodness. Pieces of the writer's previous work — landscapes, "pewter skies," endangered species (human and animal), endangered innocence, human greed, nostalgia and regret — are all here in this imagined story of three real-life siblings who formed the root stock of what we now call country music, Nashville style. Bass gives us Maxine, Bonnie and Jim Ed Brown, three of the five children of Floyd and Birdie Brown; their childhood in the backwoods of post-Depression south-central Arkansas; and their rise to fame as singers and songwriters, members of the fledgling Grand Ole Opry and contemporaries of Elvis Presley.

If there has been one constant thought during UCLA's training camp this summer, it's that freshman Anthony Barr appears ready to play college football. Barr, 6 feet 5 and 228 pounds, has been impressive playing the F-back spot in the pistol offense. The position is similar to the type of motion receiver the Bruins used the last two seasons, only there are more opportunities as a runner and receiver. "It's not just power blocking all the time," offensive coordinator Norm Chow said.
