PHOENIX - At the Dodgers' spring-training complex as a coach on Italy's World Baseball Classic team, Mike Piazza said he would “love” to speak to Vin Scully. Scully was at the facility for the Dodgers' first television broadcast of the spring. “I'd love to see him,” Piazza said. Earlier in the month, Piazza released an autobiography in which he said that Scully turned the fans of Los Angeles against him while he was negotiating a new contract. Unable to reach an agreement with the Dodgers, Piazza was traded to the Florida Marlins in 1998.

Starting to get excited? The most expensive baseball team in the history of the universe is scheduled to play its first spring game Saturday. Only you will not be able to watch it. In fact, you'll be able to watch fewer than half as many Dodgers spring games from Arizona as you could last year. The Dodgers' current broadcast schedule for their 2013 games from Camelback Ranch calls for only seven games to be televised. Last spring the Dodgers had 15 games on television from Phoenix.

Now that Time Warner Cable has beaten Fox Sports for the TV rights to the Los Angeles Dodgers, it's time for the loser to make a dramatic move in retaliation. And that should be lowering the price of its Prime Ticket cable channel next year after it stops carrying the Dodgers. After all, the Dodgers are the channel's marquee property and without them, ratings for Prime Ticket will take a hit. The fee for Prime Ticket to distributors such as DirecTV and Time Warner Cable is about $2.50 a month per-subscriber, according to industry research firm SNL Kagan.

How bad did Time Warner Cable want to get the TV rights to the Los Angeles Dodgers away from Fox Sports' Prime Ticket channel? So bad that the cable operator promised the team that it would cover fees from other distributors who don't sign on to carry the channel, people familiar with the deal said. The agreement is expected to be announced this week, perhaps later Thursday. In other words, if DirecTV, for example, does not sign on to carry the new Dodgers channel, Time Warner Cable will pay the subscription fees until a deal could be reached with the satellite broadcaster.

With Time Warner Cable putting the finishing touches on a new partnership with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the next question is what will happen to the team's current TV home, News Corp.'s Prime Ticket. Besides the Dodgers, Prime Ticket also has rights to the red-hot Clippers basketball franchise and Ducks hockey team. Its other Los Angeles sports channel -- Fox Sports West -- carries the Angels and Stanley Cup Champion Kings A Fox insider said there are no plans to consolidate Prime Ticket and Fox Sports West into one channel.

The Dodgers are leaning toward moving their television broadcasts from Fox Sports to Time Warner Cable starting in 2014, according to people familiar with the matter but not authorized to discuss it. The Dodgers have not made a final decision, the people said. The Dodgers also have yet to reach agreement with Major League Baseball on how the structure of a deal would affect the team's contribution to the MLB revenue-sharing system, according to a person familiar with the discussions but not authorized to comment on them.
