A traffic jam near San Diego's major airport aided in the recapture of a fugitive who bolted from his escort while he was being returned to Texas on Monday. According to a release from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff's Detective Rich Miller dropped off Detective Howard Kimble of Harris County, Tex., and inmate Jose Pastor at Lindbergh Field. Kimble checked in with the Continental Airlines ticket agent and was told that company policy requires inmates to be unrestrained.

A robbery suspect who escaped from a police van while en route to court was arrested Friday in San Diego County. Police in his hometown, Escondido, arrested Glenn Robinson, 35, after tracing him to a home there, San Clemente Police Lt. Paul Falk said. Robinson, who used the name Travis Rhoades when arrested in San Clemente on Sunday, was held at San Diego County Jail on suspicion of robbery and attempted robbery, Falk said.

In the third big escape from the jail since December, eight inmates broke out of San Diego County's South Bay Detention Facility in Chula Vista on Tuesday night, sparking outrage from nearby residents and merchants. A total of 28 inmates have broken out of the jail in the three escapes; 13 remained at large as of Wednesday night. The latest escape occurred about 8:30 p.m.

Two more inmates who participated in a mass escape from the County Jail in Chula Vista were recaptured earlier this week in North Park by San Diego police. The arrests brought to nine the number of escapees in the March 7 breakout who have been recaptured. Four remain at large. Police identified one of the two men apprehended Tuesday as Larry Rodriguez Dominguez, 18. The other captured escapee was Jesus Humberto Lopez, 21.

Police captured the seventh, and possibly the most dangerous, of 13 prisoners who escaped March 7 from the County Jail in Chula Vista over the weekend after a three-hour standoff in East San Diego, a police spokesman said. Christopher Bell, 21, who was being held before his escape on suspicion of murder, surrendered to police Saturday afternoon in the attic of a two-story apartment complex at 3626 44th St.

Thirteen inmates, two of whom are facing murder charges, escaped from a San Diego County jail Wednesday night by sawing through steel bars with hacksaws smuggled in through an open window, authorities said. Eleven of the men remained at large late Thursday. The jailbreak was the largest in county history. Jail officials Thursday blamed overcrowded conditions and the failure of the county government to fund requests for improvements in the security system.
