A convicted murderer who avoided the electric chair was electrocuted accidentally while sitting on a steel toilet in his cell, prison officials said. Michael Anderson Godwin, 28, apparently was trying to fix a pair of earphones connected to his television set Sunday when he bit into a wire and was electrocuted in his cell at the Central Correctional Institution, officials said. Godwin was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1983.

Susan Smith, serving a life sentence for drowning her two young sons in a lake, apparently had sex with a guard four times while in prison in Columbia, S.C., corrections officials said. Officials learned of the alleged encounters while investigating a tabloid newspaper report that she had been beaten. The guard, 50, was suspended and could be fired, a prison spokesman said. Smith allegedly had sex with the guard at the Women's Correctional Institution in May and June.
