The pair of young prostitutes smiled for their mug shots as officers pulled pockets full of evidence from the women's black jackets--half a dozen condoms, a loose wad of cash and a canister of Mace each, in case of danger. By the time the 18-year-old from Montana and her 23-year-old friend were released from the city jail on a recent night, police had taken one other key item into evidence: their clothes.

Anaheim officials on Tuesday dropped prostitution charges against seven lap dancers whose 2-year-old case briefly put the city in the spotlight in the ongoing legal battle between adult entertainment businesses and communities seeking to restrict them. "Hopefully this will be the last chapter in a long path that has cost taxpayers a lot of money and my clients a lot of anxiety," said Roger Jon Diamond, the attorney for the women.

When a prostitute and her john meet along this stretch of Beach Boulevard, they don't have to travel very far for a little privacy. Some motel owners in the area are more than willing to rent rooms by the hour at a bargain rate; some may even have colored condoms available at the front desk for a dollar, according to police and city code enforcement officials. The FBI is seeking a man suspected of abducting two teenage girls earlier this year in Washington and forcing them into prostitution in Orange County and elsewhere in Southern California, the agency announced Wednesday. According to a federal search warrant affidavit, William Earl Flavors, 26, is suspected of kidnapping a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old. He brought them to Orange County, where they were forced to prostitute themselves, the affidavit alleges.

Police said Tuesday they arrested 68 people late last week during an anti-prostitution sweep centered at Beach Boulevard and Ball Road, near Knott's Berry Farm and several residential neighborhoods. Sgt. Michael Patterson, head of the city's vice detail, said police swept the area Thursday and Friday, after officers noticed a recent influx of prostitutes. Undercover officers posed as both prostitutes and potential customers to conduct the sweep, he said.

Seeking to battle male and female prostitutes in the city, the City Council Monday night approved a ban on the hourly rental of motel rooms. The council voted 5 to 0 for the ordinance, which also requires motel operators to keep an accurate, permanent register of all customers. It takes effect in 30 days. "The purpose of this is to cut down on prostitution, and that's what we want to do," said Councilman J. Tilman Williams.

A bodybuilder once featured in a Playgirl magazine centerfold was arrested Thursday on suspicion of pimping and pandering, following an undercover investigation of an out-call service with 25 to 30 employees, police said. John Albert LaForme, 28, also was booked on suspicion of having steroids, Sgt. Barry Weinstein said. "This was a sophisticated, high-class operation" operated out of LaForme's Orange apartment for the past four years, Weinstein said.

Massage practitioners are outraged over a proposal that would require them to pass screenings for four sexually transmitted diseases if they want to work in Fountain Valley. Hoping to weed out prostitutes who pose as legitimate massage technicians, the City Council will consider next month whether to require therapists to be tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis A, B and C as well as tuberculosis.

A bar's liquor license was revoked after waitresses allegedly solicited customers for acts of prostitution, police said. The state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control suspended the Thien Kim Bar's liquor license for 130 days beginning April 1. Last July, undercover investigators from the Anaheim and Fullerton police departments were solicited for prostitution, resulting in two arrests and, eventually, convictions, police said. The bar, at 113 N. Magnolia Ave.

Fearing the return of rampant prostitution that plagued the city in years past, the City Council this week denied local business owners' pleas for increased nighttime parking at a Beach Boulevard shopping center. Thirty-eight men were arrested during a weekend prostitution sweep along Beach Boulevard, according to police. The men each allegedly solicited acts of prostitution from undercover officers in the sting operation, Anaheim Police Lt. Jim Flammini said. Female police officers from Anaheim, Orange, Buena Park and Cypress participated in the sweep. Two of the men also were arrested on alleged drug violations, Flammini said. Suspects who were driving had their cars towed and impounded, Flammini said.
