Can it be? A new twist on the world's oldest profession? So say Garden Grove police, who--after a four-week investigation--have arrested 12 people on suspicion of prostitution at three area tanning salons. Massage parlors have traditionally held the distinction as covers for prostitution. But now, local authorities said, the trend may be changing, with the illegal trade shifting to businesses that purport to offer more 1990s-style pampering--like tanning salons.

Massage practitioners are outraged over a proposal that would require them to pass screenings for four sexually transmitted diseases if they want to work in Fountain Valley. Hoping to weed out prostitutes who pose as legitimate massage technicians, the City Council will consider next month whether to require therapists to be tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis A, B and C as well as tuberculosis.

A bar's liquor license was revoked after waitresses allegedly solicited customers for acts of prostitution, police said. The state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control suspended the Thien Kim Bar's liquor license for 130 days beginning April 1. Last July, undercover investigators from the Anaheim and Fullerton police departments were solicited for prostitution, resulting in two arrests and, eventually, convictions, police said. The bar, at 113 N. Magnolia Ave.

Fearing the return of rampant prostitution that plagued the city in years past, the City Council this week denied local business owners' pleas for increased nighttime parking at a Beach Boulevard shopping center. Henry Ko, owner of the China Feast restaurant at 12100 Beach Blvd., was one of two businessmen who attended Tuesday's council meeting to ask for more parking at Park Plaza.

Thirty-eight men were arrested during a weekend prostitution sweep along Beach Boulevard, according to police. The men each allegedly solicited acts of prostitution from undercover officers in the sting operation, Anaheim Police Lt. Jim Flammini said. Female police officers from Anaheim, Orange, Buena Park and Cypress participated in the sweep. Two of the men also were arrested on alleged drug violations, Flammini said. Suspects who were driving had their cars towed and impounded, Flammini said.

The copious boxes of condoms, the sexual aids and the lack of furniture except for mattresses on the floor convinced Anaheim police they had the right place when they raided a suspected brothel. The red light bulbs in every room clinched it. "I've been in a lot of brothels, and very few I've seen actually had the red lights," the traditional illumination that spawned the term "red-light district," said Anaheim Police Sgt. Steve Walker. "They wanted the right atmosphere.
