Since the 1970s, the books of Judy Blume have prepared generations of girls for the emotional and biological hurdles on the way to womanhood: The sting of first love, those mysterious undergarments and the harsh reality that not even divine intervention can save you from puberty. In honor of Blume's legacy, the Cavern Club Theater in Silver Lake hosts "Are You There God? It's Me, Karen Carpenter," a musical parody that mashes up memorable moments from Blume's coming-of-age classic "Are You There God?

Amber, a soft-spoken, feminine 12-year-old who loves Hello Kitty and fashion design, lives with a secret. It is a secret most sixth-graders can't fathom, one she hides behind pink skirts and makeup. It's been three years since Greg Heffley self-consciously entered middle school in "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," with misguided attempts to fit in among the "gorillas who need to shave twice a day" and the girls who didn't even know he existed. Four books, 37 million copies and one hit movie later, Greg is back and as desperate as ever in "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth," the latest in Jeff Kinney's comedic series that can be found in the bedrooms of most third-grade boys. "The Ugly Truth" picks up on the theme that kicked off the series in 2007: Greg's ex-friendship with the portly, innocent Rowley.

Girls are starting puberty earlier, studies show, and some researchers speculate that rising obesity rates might be a factor. A new study finds there may be a link between early puberty and girls living in higher-income households without a biological father. The study, published this week in the Journal of Adolescent Health , looked at data on 444 ethnically diverse girls age 6 to 8, 80 of whom had no biological father living at home at the time of the study. Researchers noted the girls' onset of puberty (breast and pubic hair development)
