A second proposal to build a soccer stadium in the San Fernando Valley with no public subsidy was unveiled Wednesday, creating competition between professional and amateur groups for the site in the renovated Hansen Dam Recreation Area. Steve Sampson, the former coach of the U.S. national soccer team who now represents Pueblo Corp.

A group of California's top-grossing Latino companies pulled in $3.1 billion in revenue in 1998--a solid increase over the $2.6 billion posted by the state's top Latino firms the previous year, according to the June issue of Hispanic Business magazine. While the 116 California companies on the list of the nation's 500 top-grossing Latino enterprises outnumbered Florida's 111, their sales were dwarfed by Florida's commanding $5.5 billion, much of it stemming from trade with Latin America.

Those who doubted that soccer would catch on in America, consider Exhibit A: Southern California. Check out the grass field at Exposition Park, a space just large enough for a full-size regulation game. At 7 o'clock on a recent evening, more than 200 players are jammed into the area. Men and women, boys and girls, hundreds of feet kicking dappled soccer balls. Burly forwards chase passes a few feet away from 5-year-old pints who still need their parents to tie their cleat shoes.
