3D Systems Inc. said it has settled patent litigation between the Valencia-based company and a Quadrax Corp. subsidiary. 3D produces machines that use a laser and chemicals to rapidly make prototype models of industrial parts and other products. The company had claimed in 1990 that Quadrax Laser Technologies Inc., a unit of Portsmouth, R. I.-based Quadrax Corp., had infringed certain existing and pending patents held by 3D.

3-D Systems Inc., a producer of machines that rapidly make models of industrial parts and other products, has claimed that Quadrax Corp. infringed certain existing and pending patents held by 3-D Systems. 3-D, a Canadian-based company whose sole production unit is based in Valencia, said it made its allegations in a letter to Quadrax, a Portsmouth, R.I., maker of plastic products. 3-D said it would "vigorously pursue all avenues to enforce its patents," including filing suit against Quadrax.

3-D Systems, a Valencia company that manufactures machines for rapidly making plastic models, said it won a new patent enlarging the scope of the technology to which the company has rights. With the new patent, 3-D said it believes that all "potentially competitive" devices by other companies would infringe on its patents. In April, 3-D accused Quadrax Corp. of Rhode Island of infringing on its patents and warned that it might file suit against the company. Quadrax had declined comment.

Quadrax is a Portsmouth, R.I., company that has a laser modeling system called the Mark 1000. 3D Systems' suit was a cross-complaint to a suit filed last month by Quadrax in federal court in Providence, R.I.
