A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo, Cuba, Saturday, but officials said there was no damage reported. The quake was centered 27 miles southwest of Guantanamo and had a depth of 14 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. A magnitude-5 quake can cause considerable damage, but Chief Petty Officer Bill Mesta, a spokesman at the base, said there was none reported. There was no tsunami warning issued for the region. The U.S. base in southeastern Cuba was used to transport supplies and personnel to the aid effort after the devastating 7.0-magnitude Jan. 12 quake in Haiti, about 200 miles away.

A major earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck off the coast of Aceh on the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday triggering panic and power blackouts, although a tsunami alert was later lifted. Neighbouring Thailand and Malaysia, lying east of Sumatra, also cancelled tsunami warnings. A Reuters photographer in Sinabang on Simeulue island, south of Aceh, said that electricity was cut in the area and that he saw four injured people, including a child with a head wound who had been hit by fallen masonry.

Shipments of food, water, clothing and other basics finally began pouring in Wednesday to this earthquake-devastated town, where increasingly hungry and frustrated residents have harshly criticized what they term a tardy response by the national government. Still, fear and anger continued to stalk the community as well as other hard-hit coastal cities, such as Concepcion -- where false reports of a tsunami alert after a particularly strong aftershock sent panicked residents rushing uphill toward the mountains.

The two earthquakes that struck Beverly Hills and shook a good portion of Los Angeles this week occurred at the intersection of two dangerous faults. Although both faults are capable of producing a 7.0 temblor, experts said the quakes are probably not foreshocks to a larger quake. U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Doug Given said the quakes occurred near the junction of the Santa Monica fault, which runs underneath Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Westwood and Beverly Hills, and the Newport-Inglewood fault, which produced the deadly 1933 Long Beach quake.

Idon't know about you, but images of the tragedy in Haiti made me feel pretty silly about having paid so much attention recently to Tiger Woods' sex life, Harry Reid's gaffes or Conan O'Brien's future. There's nothing like real pain and suffering to make us realize that the stuff we tend to obsess about can be pretty meaningless. I was interviewing a writer in a hotel lobby in Bucharest, Romania, last October, when he glanced at the CNN coverage of the "balloon boy" aftermath and interrupted himself to ask, "Is that what you people in America care about?"
