The San Diego Chargers will stop accepting payments from the city for unsold tickets in exchange for binding arbitration in a dispute over an escape clause in their Qualcomm Stadium lease. The team said in a news release that it will pay the city $1 million in rent for this year and next and refund $3.6 million for unsold tickets, as it seeks to build a stadium. The team has said it would pay for the project if it can develop the rest of the 166-acre stadium site.

Hundreds of police officers, friends and family members gathered in northern San Diego on Monday to remember a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer who was killed last week in a traffic accident. Officer Dean Beattie died Thursday when his motorcycle ran into the back of a slow-moving recycling truck in the northbound lanes of California 163. The accident closed the highway for about five hours.

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted eastern San Diego County on Friday night and was felt about 40 miles away at the Padres baseball game, but there were no immediate reports of injury or damage, authorities said. The 8:14 p.m. quake occurred 10 miles north of sparsely populated Borrego Springs, officials said. Seismologists at Caltech in Pasadena and the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was not an aftershock.

UCLA will face Baylor in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl in Qualcomm Stadium on Dec. 27. The Bruins are 9-4 after losing to Stanford in the Pac-12 Conference championship game. They were ticketed for the Valero Alamo Bowl or the Holiday Bowl. Oregon State will play in the Alamo Bowl. Baylor (7-5) made a late push to get bowl eligible. The Bears won their last three games, including a 52-24 victory over then-No. 1 Kansas State on Nov. 17. UCLA and Baylor have never played in football.
