A California entrepreneur persuaded a federal judge to dismiss insider-trading charges brought after he profited from information he overheard at a club for corporate presidents. U.S. prosecutors in January said Keith Joon Kim learned in March 1999 about Quantum Corp.'s negotiations to acquire Meridian Data Inc. Kim was on a private plane en route to a Colorado retreat for the Young Presidents Organization, a group for company presidents under 50.

Data storage device maker Quantum Corp. of Milpitas, Calif., said it is acquiring Connex, a Western Digital Corp. unit that develops network-attached storage modules, for $11 million. Quantum said Connex's technology should boost the features offered in Quantum's Snap Server product line as well as broadening its storage systems portfolio. Western Digital, a Lake Forest disk drive manufacturer, also will provide hard drives to Quantum's Snap Appliances unit on a nonexclusive basis.

An explosion and fire ripped through a chemical plant Tuesday as workers were repairing damage from a blast three months ago, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others, authorities said. Witnesses who live 10 miles from the Quantum Chemical Corp. plant said they could see flames shooting into the air. The blast was caused by a leak of flammable ethylene gas, said Tim Crowley.
