Quarterback Richard Brehaut has started games for UCLA before ? two to be exact. This, though, is different. With Kevin Prince out for the season following knee surgery, Brehaut has the opportunity to define his college career in the next five games. "I know I don't have to compete with anyone else but myself," Brehaut said. "But with that comes responsibility. " Brehaut was in a no-win situation at No. 1-ranked Oregon last week. The Ducks scored early and often and the Bruins' offense was unable to keep up, or even get started.

UCLA concluded spring practice Saturday night at Drake Stadium with a scrimmage that looked nice against an evening sunset but settled nothing at the quarterback position. Next stop is fall, to the backdrop of Tom Petty's song "Into the Great Wide Open. " Four UCLA passers combined to complete 23 of 45 passes for 185 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. Photos: UCLA spring practice scrimmage Please, though, don't draw any conclusions. Kevin Prince, last year's starter, didn't participate as he recovers from knee surgery.

UCLA plays Arizona on Saturday in a game in which the Bruins will either equal last season's victory total or continue their rock-in-a-deep pool descent. Times staff writer Chris Foster looks at some of the game's key issues and matchups. There was something in the air around Westwood this week and, after three consecutive losses, it didn't have a "relentlessly positive" feel. On Wednesday, Jayson Allmond, a fullback who is redshirting, became fodder for individual tackling drills.

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince never saw the guy coming. He was making a dash for the sideline in the season opener when Houston's D.J. Hayden sent him head over heels. Prince suffered a concussion and a separated shoulder. UCLA quarterback Richard Brehaut has no idea who landed on him. He cut up the middle for five yards last week and a Washington State player plopped down on his left leg. Brehaut hobbled off with a broken bone in the leg. The Bruins' "pistol" offense may need a warning label: Can be hazardous to your quarterback's health.

This is a season on unfamiliar turf for UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince. He goes into the Bruins' opener at Rice on Thursday as a sideline spectator. The last time that happened was in 2008, when the Bruins opened against Tennessee and Prince was sitting out as a redshirt freshman. Prince has been UCLA's starter the last three seasons but will watch redshirt freshman Brett Hundley run the Bruins' offense against the Owls. “It's different,” Prince said. “I'm just trying to be mentor to some of the young guys.” Particularly to Hundley, who will play in his first college game Thursday.

Salaries for UCLA football assistant coaches have dropped since Rick Neuheisel was hired as coach. After Neuheisel was hired in 2008, Athletic Director Dan Guerrero increased the pool of money for assistant coaches from $1.625 million to $1.8 million. Coordinators Mike Johnson and Joe Tresey will be paid $250,000.

UCLA's woes on offense were focused on the Bruins' quarterbacks Saturday after a 27-13 loss to Arizona. The Bruins managed only 211 yards -- one week after rolling up 448 yards in a 45-26 loss to California. "We thought we were moving in the right direction with the plays we made against Cal," Coach Rick Neuheisel said. "But they weren't being made today. I don't know what the problem was, but it was a frustrating day for our offense." Neuheisel yanked quarterback Kevin Prince in favor of Kevin Craft , then yanked Craft for Richard Brehaut, who got one series near the end of the game.

Fresh from a weekend of rest, UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince looked Monday as if he would be capable of playing against Kansas State by Saturday. Prince, whose training camp has been disrupted by a small tear in a back muscle, split time with Richard Brehaut running the first-team offense. Both were erratic with throws, but Prince had more velocity than he has had since before being injured Aug.10. "This is what we've been working up, this is what the goal was — to rest the weekend, take the Friday scrimmage off, hoping that I could do a little more today," Prince said.

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince will have to be in practice, and throwing the ball, by Wednesday to be able to start the season opener at Kansas State on Sept. 4, Coach Rick Neuheisel said Friday. Prince, who has a small tear in a back muscle, is expected to go through limited drills Monday. Neuheisel had previously said players coming back from injuries would have to be in practice Monday or Tuesday to play in the opener, but that in Prince's case, "You make it a little different because of his experience.
