A 15-year-old boy who was pulled unconscious from the swimming pool at Hollywood High remained in critical condition Thursday night. The sophomore was spotted in the water "just after a regular P.E. swimming class," said Hilda Ramirez of the Los Angeles Unified School District. When a lifeguard and the school custodian pulled him out, he had no pulse and was not breathing, authorities said. Paramedics summoned to the high school on North Hilland Avenue at 12:40 p.m.

Comedian and actor Redd Foxx collapsed with a heart attack Friday afternoon at Paramount Studios and was hospitalized in extremely critical condition, authorities said. Paramedics were called to the studio shortly after 4 p.m., a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said. Foxx was unconscious and "extremely critical" when he was brought into the emergency room at Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A 70-year-old man was burned on his face and shoulders in a fire at a bungalow that was not equipped with a smoke alarm, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said Wednesday. The fire was reported shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of Lucile Avenue, spokesman Brian Humphrey said. Firefighters were able to rescue the man and put out the blaze in about 17 minutes, Humphrey said. "A smoke alarm might have prevented any injuries," Humphrey said.

Surgeries were postponed for an hour Wednesday at Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, and the hospital was without hot water for more than four hours because of a break in a water main that supplies its boilers, hospital officials said. "The computer systems and (emergency) generator were not affected, and there were no evacuations," said hospital spokesman Bob Steward. About 5,000 gallons of water flooded the basement to a depth of about 1 1/2 feet, city fire officials said.

Assembly Speaker Pro Tem Mike Roos (D-Los Angeles) and Assemblywoman Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) said they will ask state budget conference committee members to earmark more than $100 million generated by new tobacco taxes for hospitals sharing a heavy portion of trauma and emergency care. "We once had a safety net. Now there is a huge hole in that net," said Roos, noting that Whittier Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital's recently announced plans to close its trauma facility would leave the Los Angeles area with only 13 of its original 23 trauma centers.

A 27-year-old passenger stood up on a Hollywood bus and stabbed a man before slitting his own throat, police said. Elias Morales was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, said Officer Alvin Waters of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Division. Morales was in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Melecio Perez, 28, was hospitalized at Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center for stab wounds, Waters said. Sgt.

A baby boy born prematurely to a homeless couple living in Griffith Park remained in critical condition Wednesday. The couple were camping in a remote canyon about three-fourths of a mile from the Griffith Observatory when the child was born in their tent Tuesdayafternoon. Shortly after the birth, the father flagged down a park patrol officer, who hiked to the camp and radioed for help. Ranger Doug Kilpatrick was one of those who answered the call.

Two West Covina teen-agers were hospitalized after a shooting outside Six Flags Magic Mountain that authorities suggest was gang-related. One youth, 17, is in serious condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia from a bullet wound to the torso that cut his liver. The other boy, 14, was shot in the wrist and taken to Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. His condition was unavailable. Authorities declined to identify the two teen-agers because of their ages.

Two young Glendale men were hospitalized Saturday after being shot by a group of assailants near the Fern Dell in Griffith Park, authorities said. One unidentified 20-year-old was wounded in the ankle around 7 p.m. as he ran for cover across Los Feliz Boulevard, according to Officer Mike Partain, with the Los Angeles Police Department. While paramedics were treating the man in the 2000 block of North Oxford Avenue, Partain said, shots were heard from the 1900 block of North Serrano Avenue.
