The June primaries have passed, and thankfully so has the mudslinging! Why don't today's politicians base their campaigns on their own merits and accomplishments rather than the mistakes of their opponents? Give the voters what they want: a straightforward campaign that is free from put-downs and accusations. When will the politicians figure out that criticizing their opponents will not win them an election? Sang Korman learned this lesson too late and it cost him. Korman ran against Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley)

Why is it reapportionment always seems to bring out the ugliest and most unseemly aspects of our public officials? With acquiescence from the other county supervisors and the connivance of County Executive Richard Wittenberg and LAFCO Director Robert Braitman, Supervisor John Flynn has tried to geographically divide Latino interests to deny their potential electoral strength in this county. These same schemers again have divided the Ojai Valley communities of interest to stem any incipient political challenges that might coalesce from this politically fertile area.

The Column Right on "illegals" and crime (Aug. 16) by Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) once again highlighted the xenophobia and lack of perspective shared by the author and his party. Gallegly's statistics on the number of "illegal" criminals and the rate of crime committed by them appeal to our societal xenophobia while overshadowing the real crime issues facing our society today; 62% of the state's convicted felons (of all ethnic backgrounds) are rearrested while on parole within three years (Feb.

It was no surprise that Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) voted against aid to indigent victims of rape and incest. It is not a question of cost because the alternative in tax dollars is far more expensive. It is not a question of morals because who can defend the immorality of rape and incest? Rather, it is the official platform of the Republican Party that stubbornly opposes freedom of choice for pregnant women, even for innocent victims of crime and debauchery. The bill finally passed, despite Gallegly's opposition, thanks to many farsighted Democrats and Republicans who formerly voted against such assistance.

Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) has been talking out of both sides of his mouth for years: 1. He claims to be an environmentalist, yet he co-sponsored a bill to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas exploration and supports increased offshore drilling off the California coastline. 2. He claims to be a friend to senior citizens, yet he voted to lower funding for the Older Americans Act. 3. He claims his only opposition to abortion is that he opposes paying for the procedure with federal funds, yet he supported a constitutional ban on abortion.

The House approved $10.2 million to build a new ship defense combat engineering facility at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Port Hueneme, and $12.6 million to expand and renovate the Point Mugu Range Operations Center. The funding requests now move to the Senate for approval.

Re "Bush Crosses Historic Lines in Local Stop," Aug. 10. George W. Bush must think the people of Oxnard can't remember from one minute or election to the next. Does he think we forgot or don't care that Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) coauthored Proposition 187? Does he think it unimportant that Gallegly bragged about supporting the proposition's restrictions, which deny children born in the United States to immigrants unable to prove their legal status their right to attend public schools or receive any type of public health care?

Re "Gallegly Kicks Off Campaign for 8th Term," Nov. 29. It should surprise no one that Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) would not turn down a chance to continue in his present position, especially since his party's control of Congress allows him to pork-barrel in the same manner for which he used to condemn the Democrats when they were in control. And by dredging up a rift between Gallegly and a handful of farmers who place profits above human rights or the fact that the Chinese peddled for influence in American elections, it's equally obvious that the writers of this article were attempting to create a story where one did not exist.

Lawmakers from Ventura and Los Angeles counties Wednesday announced the formation of a 13-member advisory committee to oversee a health study of workers at Rockwell International's Santa Susana Field Laboratory near Simi Valley.
