Halfway around the world in England, the rabbi who got the job that Abner Weiss once wanted is ruffling feathers, with pronouncements that Jews outside the Orthodox tradition are "thieves" who have cut the ties with the faith of their ancestors. And here in Los Angeles, Weiss--an Orthodox rabbi--is smoothing them as he calls for Jews of all stripes to work together and assumes the leadership of the area's most influential group of rabbis.

As public debate over Proposition 8 heated up last fall, few religious leaders in California fought the ban on same-sex marriage as tirelessly as Rabbi Denise L. Eger. The Reform rabbi and lesbian denounced the ballot measure at news conferences. She pressed fellow rabbis to join the cause. She performed dozens of weddings for gay and lesbian couples -- sometimes five a day.

Southern California's largest collection of rabbis voted overwhelmingly this week to oppose Proposition 8, the proposed amendment to the California Constitution that would define marriage as between only a man and a woman. Leaders of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California -- with representatives from the Reconstructionist, Reform, Conservative and Orthodox movements -- said they wanted to protect the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples. "For many rabbis it speaks on a personal level in terms of people they deal with whose lives have been impacted over the issue," said Rabbi Stewart Vogel of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills and the board's president.
