"I'm a big girl, I can defend myself," said Gagliano, a 5-foot-3 1/2, 122-pound junior midfielder on the Monroe High soccer team. That's the boys' soccer team. Of approximately 300 players on 15 Valley-area City Section boys' soccer teams, Gagliano is the only girl. Gagliano, a member of the U. S. Youth Soccer Assn.

Alemany High defeated Capistrano Valley, 3-1, Wednesday to finish third in the Ocean View girls soccer tournament. Shannon Lambert, Rachel Gagliano and Sondra Shatkin scored for the Indians. Alemany (9-4-1) won its first three games in the 32-team tournament before a loss Tuesday dropped it from championship contention.

Birmingham 40, Monroe 7--Danny Larson completed 16 of 27 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns and ran for three more to lead Birmingham at Monroe. Larson rushed for 167 yards in five carries and scored on runs of 67, 56, and 20 yards. He threw scoring passes of 11 yards to Carlos Fernandez and 26 yards Anthony McCombs. Monroe kicker Rachel Gagliano tied the state scoring record for a girl with a third-quarter extra-point.

Monroe 14, Poly 14--Monroe quarterback Jesse Wallace threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Gerrit Maxwell with 4:12 left and Rachel Gagliano kicked the extra point to give Monroe (1-3-1, 1-1-1) the tie at Poly. Although Wallace completed only five of 22 passes, they went for 141 yards. Poly (1-4-1, 0-2-1) took a 14-7 lead late in the third quarter as quarterback Lance Garcia ran 16 yards for a touchdown.

Chatsworth 9, Monroe 0--Rayna Stewart intercepted a Jesse Wallace pass in the first quarter and returned it 38 yards for the game's only touchdown at Chatsworth. Joe Mier added a safety, blocking Garrit Maxwell's punt out of the end zone. Chatsworth (1-0) limited Monroe (0-1) to 18 yards in total offense and three first downs. Wallace completed just four of 14 passes for 46 yards, and the Vikings finished with minus-28 yards rushing.

Five Alemany starters were sidelined because of injuries Tuesday, but the Indians didn't miss a beat against South Pasadena. Sophomore Rachel Gagliano scored three goals to lead Alemany to a 3-1 victory at South Pasadena in a girls nonleague soccer match. "Our bench is good," Alemany Coach Marcia Takahashi said. "We don't have any weak players that we have to hide. Our subs came in and played well."

Point Loma Nazarene's 11th-ranked women's volleyball team defeated visiting Cal Baptist Tuesday, 15-13, 3-15, 15-10, 15-5, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Roberta Simpson led PLNC (19-6, 9-0) with 13 kills and LeAnne Lopez added 47 assists. Cal Baptist fell to 14-12 and 5-4. MEN'S SOCCER Pacific Christian College defeated Christian Heritage, 2-1, in Fullerton. Paul Ermie scored the goal for Christian Heritage (2-6).

The Westlake High girls' volleyball team let Agoura into its gym Tuesday night, but the Chargers would not let the Warriors into the Marmonte League match, winning, 15-9, 15-1, 15-7. Jenny Pavley led Agoura (9-2, 8-1 in league play) with 15 kills, Tracy Heflin had 20 assists and Tammy Barus added 15 assists. Westlake is 6-3 in league play. Monroe High kicker Rachel Gagliano kicked a field goal and an extra point Thursday afternoon, but her efforts weren't enough for the visiting Vikings, who fell to Van Nuys, 17-10 in a Mid-Valley League game. Gagliano has scored 10 points this season, putting her within a point of the state record for most points by a girl in a season. Mia Labowitz of San Diego High converted eight of nine extra-point attempts and kicked a 32-yard field goal to set the record in 1987.
