It's been a long, exhausting campaign season for political pundits, and on Thursday a tired but clearly exhilarated Rachel Maddow stopped by “The Colbert Report” to discuss the results of Tuesday's election. It was by any measure a very good night for liberals, who celebrated not only Obama's victory but also the decriminalization of marijuana in two states and the legalization of gay marriage by popular vote in three. In Maddow's post-election show Wednesday night, the MSNBC host unleashed an anti-Republican rant that quickly went viral . The party had gotten “shellacked,” she argued, because  of their “vacuum-sealed, door-locked spin cycle of telling each other what makes them feel good.” Colbert asked her why she felt the need to do an “end zone dance.” Maddow claimed she was simply describing what had happened, in simple terms, but “this is one of those days when the facts have a liberal bias.” As for the enthused viewer reaction to it, “Just raw data makes people, like, send you flowers,” she said.

Rachel Maddow is a "hater" who needs to stop nitpicking -- or so says Sen. Rand Paul. Maddow, the liberal MSNBC host, this week accused GOP leader Paul of making a speech that "totally plagiarized" the Wikipedia page for the sci-fi film "Gattaca. " In the speech, Paul referenced the movie and its world "where DNA plays a primary role in determining your social class. " This and other lines seemed lifted directly from the Wikipedia page. SEATTLE -- This weekend, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and I sat down in a couple of armchairs and talked about how America drifts to war. Maddow is on a frenetic cross-country tour to publicize "Drift," her new book that shot to the top of the New York Times bestseller list as soon as it was released. She flew in for a few hours in Seattle on Saturday, and I interviewed her in front of a standing-room-only crowd at Town Hall. In liberal Seattle, Maddow is a rock star, and she got a rock star's greeting when she walked onstage in her very casual clothes (including sneakers with Halloween-orange shoelaces)

Bill O'Reilly, you have a new contender for the cable-news throne: Megyn Kelly.  "The Kelly File" -- with former daytime host Kelly carving up the issues of the day -- delivered big returns for Fox News Channel in its second outing at 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to Nielsen.  Kelly rounded up 2.8 million total viewers, which dominated the time slot over MSNBC's Rachel Maddow (1.1 million) and CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" (590,858). That was a huge increase over the 2.1 million "Kelly File" saw for Monday's premiere.  ON LOCATION: Where the cameras roll         More important, Kelly was within hailing distance of the man who has dominated cable news for more than a decade: O'Reilly (3 million)

A veritable A-list of artists, actors, fashion designers and business leaders  streamed into the Hammer Museum in Westwood Saturday to celebrate artists Barbara Kruger and Cindy Sherman, raising a record $2 million for the museum's exhibitions and programs. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and actor/author/musician Steve Martin delivered the night's tributes. As if their talks weren't entertaining enough, the finale came courtesy of Katy Perry, who has a busy week in store with performances planned at Sunday's fundraiser for President Obama   and at  Thursday's amfAR Inspiration Gala.

Rising from their seats en masse, the liberal faithful at Beverly Hills' Saban Theatre greeted Rachel Maddow like parishioners welcoming a mega-church pastor. Cellphone cameras flashed like fireworks. Lusty, and perhaps a few lustful, cheers cascaded from the Art Deco mezzanine. Bill Maher, the interviewer at Tuesday night's Writers Bloc public chat, turned to Maddow as they took the sold-out theater's stage. How much of that do you think was for you, and how much was for me?

NEW YORK -- Rachel Maddow looked as if she were about to leap into the air with excitement. The newly minted MSNBC host was crouched on a swiveling office chair, her feet propped underneath her, gleefully contemplating the day's sudden turn of events. Bill Wolff, her executive producer, had just walked into her office with the latest news: Sen. John McCain was suspending his campaign to rush to Washington and work on the Wall Street bailout.

Do the Republican members of the House care about the Americans they're hurting by shutting down the government? Or are they just having fun with politics at our expense? Sure, Congress is still getting paid, even though they're to blame for this whole mess. As The Times editorial board wrote Tuesday: “The inconvenient truth for the GOP is that 'defunding Obamacare,' as the House tried to do, wouldn't stop most of the major provisions of the healthcare law, some of which have already gone into effect.

Fans of Ed Schultz and his "Ed Show" have reason to cheer. The burly newsman is coming back to MSNBC's weeknight schedule after spending most of the last four months on a weekend-only program. Schultz's new time slot, 5 p.m., will replace one of two nightly airings of "Hardball" with Chris Matthews. Matthews' show will continue to air in its second time slot, at 7 p.m. on weeknights. The move is good news for fans of the outspoken Schultz. Though his show had been a weeknight program since it debuted on MSNBC in 2009, in May it began airing on Saturdays.

Several high-profile news stories, including the Boston Marathon bombing, Edward Snowden's national security leaks, the conclusion of the Jodi Arias trial and the beginning of the George Zimmerman trial, lifted ratings at Fox News, CNN and HLN. According to Nielsen, CNN saw its prime-time audience jump almost 50% for the quarter to an average of 666,000 viewers compared with the same period in 2012. In the 25-54 demographic, CNN was up 77%. Fox News continued to dominate overall, finishing first in prime time with an average of 1.9 million viewers, a gain of 5%. However, the network was down 11% in adults 25-54.

Shepard Smith, longtime host of the nightly "Fox Report," is Fox News Channel's No. 1 anchor. That's thanks in part to his mix of folksy accessibility and anchor-worthy gravitas, which have earned him a perch at Politico.com, where his news clips are regularly featured in a regular column, the Daily Shep. So you were on smoke watch in Rome. How did Fox News cover the papal conclave and what was that scene like? Well, I did it in '05, and it was different because it began in a mourning phase [for Pope John Paul II]

As the highest-rated and most controversial anchor on MSNBC, Keith Olbermann never failed to get people talking. But when the "Countdown" host abruptly parted ways with the network Friday, neither side was willing to say much at all. During his on-air farewell speech, Olbermann simply explained that he'd "been told" that this would be his final "Countdown," implying that MSNBC had fired him, before wishing his fans "good night and good luck....
