Rae Linda Brown, a specialist on jazz and other American music, has joined the UC Irvine music department as its first full-time American music historian. She has begun teaching classes in the history of jazz and 20th-Century music. Prior to her appointment as an assistant professor at UCI, Brown taught musicology at the University of Michigan in 1986 and was a UC President's Fellow at UCLA for 1 1/2 years.

The dean of UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts has taken the extraordinary step of putting the music department into receivership, putting a pair of outside administrators in control of the department for three years.

Robert Hickok, dean of the UC Irvine School of Fine Arts, is one of 77 faculty members taking the latest early-retirement offer by the university, the third such offer since 1991. Appointed dean in late 1988, Hickok oversaw notable developments in the school but also encountered obstacles imposed by a budget-cutting state Legislature and electorate. In an interview Monday in his office on campus, Hickok looked back on his tenure and explained his decision to leave by July 1.
