Although the Dodgers' prospects have already made several interesting plays, Rafael Bournigal says there is one thing fans will never see. "I will not hit a home run," he said. "I don't have a chance." Bournigal, who was recalled from Albuquerque only because Jose Offerman is suffering from a groin injury, hit one home run in 1,776 minor league at-bats. That was at Vero Beach in 1989, and he really hasn't come close since.

In a surprising move, the Dodgers sent Jose Offerman to the club's triple-A team in Albuquerque on Monday and recalled Rafael Bournigal, the best defensive shortstop in the club's farm system. It was a gutty move by Fred Claire, Dodger executive vice president, who has long been criticized for handing Offerman the starting shortstop job at the end of the 1991 season and staying with him, despite his defensive shortcomings.

Rafael Bournigal made his first start at shortstop Sunday and demonstrated why his defense is highly regarded by the Dodgers. Bournigal turned a tough double play in the first inning on a hard-hit ball by Jeff Conine that took a bad hop right before it reached Bournigal, who handled it flawlessly.

Cory Snyder, in Los Angeles to treat an inflammation of his lower back, said he was feeling better. Before he suffered the back injury, Snyder was expected to be the backup not only for the outfield but for Offerman at shortstop. But even with Snyder injured, the club is leaning toward Mike Sharperson over Rafael Bournigal because Sharperson would give them added depth on the bench.

Darryl Strawberry appeared in his second game Monday since beginning the testing period for his injured back, but still doesn't seem to be testing it. He might have cost the Dodgers a run during the fourth inning when he was slow to charge and make a throw on Mark Lemke's single. This allowed Lonnie Smith to score from second. During the seventh inning, he didn't even try to make a throw home on a single by David Justice, allowing Terry Pendleton to score easily from second.

A game-tying home run by Oakland's Mark McGwire in the ninth inning and two run-scoring singles in the 12th ruined New York's celebration of its World Series title, as the Athletics won the Yankee home opener, 3-1, on Friday. McGwire hit Mariano Rivera's first pitch into the black section of empty bleachers in center field, only the 13th ball ever hit there. Yankee reliever Jeff Nelson (0-3) hit Damon Mashore leading off the 12th and Mashore stole second with two outs.

Despite the need for a steady shortstop, Dodger Executive Vice President Fred Claire says that there will be no change at that position next season. Jose Offerman will remain the Dodger shortstop for a third season. "There will be no changes there," Claire said. "I think Jose has the ability and all the things you look for in a shortstop." After making 20 errors during the first half of the season, Offerman has made nine in the second half, several of them costly.
