"Rambling Rose" went to London and ran afoul of the British censors. The movie, starring Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, Lukas Haas and Robert Duvall, about a naive 19-year-old woman who shakes up a quiet Southern town with her alluring ways, was trimmed about 20 seconds--to remove portions of a bedroom scene with Rose (Dern) and a 13-year-old boy (Haas). In the scene, the boy expresses curiosity about a woman's body and she lets him touch her breast.

The Oscars never run out of firsts. Probably the most remarkable of this year's never-befores are the nominations of a mother, Diane Ladd, and daughter, Laura Dern, for best supporting actress and best actress, respectively, in the same film, "Rambling Rose." They don't play mother and daughter, as they did in David Lynch's steamy road drama, "Wild at Heart," two years ago.

A comic but tender bedroom scene between Laura Dern and 14-year-old Lukas Haas in the movie "Rambling Rose" has been drawing astonished laughter from screening audiences and others who've seen the film in recent weeks. That scene, says Martha Coolidge, the film's director, "is one of the two compelling reasons to make the picture."

"The Silence of the Lambs" will not be silent. "Thelma & Louise" will not be demure. And "Rambling Rose" will no longer be aimless. The people behind those movies are going for Oscar gold--even if they don't have the kind of money it usually takes to campaign for Hollywood's top honors. All three are in the ironic situation of having been recognized with a total of 15 Academy Award nominations, and yet the three film companies that distributed them have been in financial hot water.
