It's a mid-century modern home with a famous designer and a fabulous view. But is it a Silver Lake cultural monument? The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission will wrestle with that question Thursday when it decides whether to recommend that the Waverly Drive house become the city's 1,038th historic-cultural landmark. Such a designation would stall a plan by a Beverly Hills developer to demolish the ranch-style house designed by pioneering Chinese American architect Gilbert L. Leong and replace it with five three-story homes.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jeffrey M. Kalban for creating a residence that is distinctive and appropriate for the Malibu coast ["The Ultimate Sea Change," May 10]. He joins a handful of architects who have achieved success in that endeavor. Somewhere in the party that is his success, I must inject an obituary for the ranch-style house that was the donor for this project. The ranch style is a native California modern design that embodies the modesty and honesty that were key to the success of America.

San Antonio College, and his wife, Laura, a school office employee, were house-hunting almost two decades ago, they combed the suburbs of San Gabriel Valley. Their search ended when they found a three-bedroom ranch-style house in the Ganesha Hills neighborhood of Pomona. "We looked and looked and finally decided this is where we wanted to be," Richard Alvarez said, as he looked out over his large tree-filled yard.

The cause of the 1 a.m. fire in the 15400 block of Briarwood Drive in Sherman Oaks was not known, but investigators were looking into the possibility that a portable electric heater may have sparked the blaze. DEBORAH FURLAN saw something in the ramshackle ranch-style house off a busy street in Toluca Lake: a Japanese-inspired oasis with a soaring glass entrance. Doris Opilo's Valentine from her husband was a large pink box made of wood and stucco, full of empty rooms she plans to fill with their new oak furniture and her calla lily pictures. It was her newly rebuilt house. Scarcely three months after last autumn's wildfires destroyed hundreds of homes in their San Bernardino neighborhood, the Opilos this weekend will become the first family in the city's burned-out area to enjoy a homecoming.

The 88-year-old man sits on a bench and lights a cracked briar pipe. He looks out at the black void and sighs. The firestorm three months ago killed most of the sound here. No birds warble, no leaves flutter, no coyotes yelp in the night. The giant, tilted slabs of granite on the ridge peer like statues down on a moldering pyre. Jerome "Joe" Wier comes up here most days in his little Chevy pickup and secondhand clothes.
