This post has been corrected, as indicated below. Environmentalists took a new step Thursday in a decades-long dispute by filing a lawsuit against federal agencies that gave permission for construction of a community of 60,000 residents along the last wild river in Southern California. The lawsuit claims the Clean Water Act permit approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2011 failed to accurately assess the effect the Newhall Ranch project would have on water quality, Native American cultural sites, and endangered plants and animals along the Santa Clara River.

The two California Department of Fish and Wildlife scientists charged with doing environmental work on the proposed Newhall Ranch development had a daunting task. They were to help review whether and how the largest residential development ever approved in Los Angeles County - 20,000 homes stretching across a bucolic valley - could be built without undue harm to the environment, protected species and Southern California's last major wild river, the Santa Clara. The project was controversial and dizzyingly complicated.

Arson investigators were at a San Fernando Valley home Tuesday morning after firefighters responded to blazes at the address two days in a row. The first fire was reported early Monday, when the Los Angeles Fire Department was called out to the two-story home at 19016 Muirkirk Drive in Porter Ranch. There were three people home at the time; one was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. A second fire was reported Tuesday morning at the same property, said Eric French, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, adding that it was not immediately clear if it involved the same structure.

Baseball season must be ready to begin, because players and even coaches are starting to walk around campuses with strange haircuts. Take the case with a group of players from Valencia West Ranch. Shortstop Jagger Rusconi suggested a tiger mohawk look, and that's what several players decided to get, along with Coach Casey Burrill. Burrill's wife was not too impressed. But hey, the baseball season begins next weekend. Eric.firstname.lastname@example.org

Mild temperatures make winter a good time to go horseback riding, hiking, mountain bicycling or just kicking back in Tucson -- and one dude ranch will pay you to fly there too. All-inclusive Tanque Verde Ranch offers up to $399 in airfare credit for guests who stay at least four nights. The deal: I like the Cold There? Fly Here! deal (even though it's far from cold here in L.A.) because of the credit, which guests receive when they present their proof of payment. Note that the perk is per booking, not per person.

ARTOIS, Calif. - Nestled in a corner of the Sacramento Valley known for its rice, almonds and walnuts, densely packed rows of manicured olive trees stretch toward the horizon. This 1,700-acre spread is the domain of California Olive Ranch, an upstart company with big ambitions. The U.S. is the world's No. 3 consumer of olive oil, drizzling 293,000 metric tons of the stuff over salads and pizzas last year. Yet almost every drop was produced overseas in countries including Spain, Italy and Greece.
