Terry Munson has been named the varsity basketball coach at Rancho Alamitos High School. Munson, the Vaqueros' junior varsity coach for the past three years, succeeds Pat Adams, 52, who resigned two weeks ago. Adams said he disapproved of the new Garden Grove League plan to have boys and girls varsity teams play doubleheaders while lower-level teams play at another site.

Rancho Alamitos scored the first 42 points in Friday's game and defeated Bolsa Grande, 42-7, putting the Vaqueros exactly where Coach Mike Enright hoped they would be heading into the final week of the regular season. "One of things that I wanted coming into this season is for this team to be playing a big game at the end of the season," Enright said. "That's exactly where we are--we've got a playoff game next week."

Rancho Alamitos Coach Doug Case was more effusive than usual after his team's 46-0 Garden Grove League victory over Santiago Friday. "This was a great win," Case said. "Our execution was outstanding, we kept penalties and turnovers to a minimum, our defense posted its third straight shutout--we're firing on all cylinders." The Vaqueros (5-0, 2-0), the top-ranked team in Division VIII and ranked sixth in Orange County, dominated from the start.

Pacifica High School's 21-20 victory over Rancho Alamitos Friday night boiled down to this: Pacifica needed to win in order to secure a playoff berth; Rancho Alamitos did not. It showed in the way the teams played the Garden Grove League game in front of 2,000 at Bolsa Grande High. Pacifica played with a sense of urgency, taking advantage of Rancho Alamitos' sloppy play.
