Middlemass, 58, of Portland, Conn., faces a minimum of 22 years in federal prison when he is sentenced July 20 in U.S. District Court in New Haven, Conn., said Tom Carson, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office. He also could be fined $250,000.

For the second time in six months, a financially troubled local Ritz-Carlton resort hotel--this time in Rancho Mirage--has been taken over by new owners as the previous owners struggle to rid themselves of debt problems. The 240-room Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage was built seven years ago on 24 acres in Riverside County and has become a popular destination for Southern California's rich and famous. It was taken over last week by Olympus Real Estate Corp.

The largest herd of bighorn sheep in the Rancho Mirage desert highlands may perch not above some rocky point but on the city's supply of stationery, which features a stylized ram. Chosen by Rancho Mirage as its official symbol nearly three decades ago, the bighorn's fortunes have faltered as the city's population swelled. Struck by cars, drowned in swimming pools, poisoned by pesticides and exotic plants, the animal's plight puts it on the federal endangered species list.

She said she saw figures running out of the bedroom and into the night. Investigators weren't comfortable with her story.

RANCHO MIRAGE -- Their friends were gone, yet they spoke of them as if they were just down the hall or perhaps running late for class. Maybe it was out of habit or maybe they just didn't want to let go. "I have been at this school since I was in kindergarten, so losing three people who were the life of the school is like losing a part of yourself," said 17-year-old Rachel Gottlieb.

Even when it was just an architectural glimmer in the eye of Walter and Leonore Annenberg, the desert estate where President Barack Obama will greet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday was never in danger of being confused with a mere vacation house. Designed by the prolific Los Angeles architect A. Quincy Jones and the decorator William Haines and finished in 1966, Sunnylands was inspired by Maya ruins even as it accommodated elements of Midcentury Modernism and the Annenbergs' own Asian antiquities and lacquered furniture.

WASHINGTON - Two years ago, President Obama hosted China's president, Hu Jintao, in a fastidiously choreographed White House summit involving an honor guard, a state dinner and a 21-gun salute. In meetings, officials spent more time reading from scripts than discussing touchy topics of mutual concern. The ceremonial trappings will be gone when Obama hosts China's new president, Xi Jinping, at a "shirt-sleeves" summit Friday and Saturday at Sunnylands, a 200-acre desert retreat in Rancho Mirage with a pedigree so laid back that it flanks a golf course at the intersection of Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope drives.

Inbee Park essentially won the Kraft Nabisco Championship on Sunday on her first hole at the Mission Hills Country Club course in Rancho Mirage. Park, from South Korea, made a resolute birdie while Azusa's Lizette Salas, 23, who had started the day in second place and three shots behind Park, hit a nervous drive in the rough and made a double bogey while her playing partner, Park, watched without outward expression. But inwardly Park must have been giving herself a high-five.
