Recently in San Pedro a splendid monument honoring our merchant seamen was erected. This dramatic sculpture of two working sailors will remind us of our maritime history. It was designed by Jasper D'Ambrosi, born and raised in the harbor area. I cannot help but compare this successful work of art with the "Steel Cloud" monument proposed for downtown Los Angeles. That project, unfortunately, looks like a massive junkyard, and would overwhelm a dark freeway tunnel--more like a message of traffic despair.

The crash occurred about 6:20 p.m. Monday, when a twin-engine Cessna Citation coming from Hailey, Idaho, veered off the right side of the runway and crashed into a nearby storage hangar. The last time Victoria Hu saw her father at her family's home, she was 16, still a student at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. As the years have flown by, she has gone on to study at UC Berkeley, become an adept illustrator, and launched a passionate and dogged campaign to bring home her father, Hu Zhicheng, a businessman and American citizen held in China for nearly five years after becoming embroiled in a legal dispute. Her efforts were rewarded last week when Hu, 51, was allowed to return to his Rancho Palos Verdes home.

The Galaxy has scheduled a Saturday news conference to announce it has acquired the rights to former U.S. national team player Robbie Rogers from the Chicago Fire in exchange for midfielder Mike Magee. Rogers, a 26-year-old winger from Rancho Palos Verdes, briefly walked away from soccer last winter after being released by second-division English club Leeds United. In February, shortly after his retirement, he published a personal and powerful Internet blog in which he revealed he was gay. Rogers' return to the field for the Galaxy will make him the first openly gay player in Major League Soccer history.
