Xerox to Buy More of Division: The Stamford, Conn.-based company said it will pay $960 million to boost its controlling stake in Rank Xerox, an office equipment business formed nearly 40 years ago. The Marlow, England, company makes Xerox office machines and sells them in more than 80 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. Xerox Corp. said the deal will boost its stake in the firm to 80% from 67%.

Xerox Corp. on Friday said that it will pay about $1.5 billion to buy the remaining 20% stake in its 41-year-old Rank Xerox office equipment joint venture from Britain's Rank Group. Xerox suspended a $1-billion stock-buyback program to help fund the acquisition. Other funding sources include free cash flow and proceeds from the sale of its insurance units. The purchase gives Stamford, Conn.-based Xerox sole ownership of the Marlow, England-based venture, which will be renamed Xerox Ltd.

Cerplex Group Inc. said it has begun negotiations to acquire Rank Xerox Ltd.'s electronics repair and refurbishment operations in northern France. Financial terms were not disclosed. Rank Xerox, which has 670 employees, is owned by Xerox Corp. and Rank Organisation Plc. Tustin-based Cerplex, which repairs and upgrades electronics equipment primarily for the computer and telecommunications industries, said it expects to complete the acquisition by the end of the first quarter of 1996.
